I have been reading “Life Between Buildings” by Jan Gehl. It is a great book on urban planning and observations on why some places thrive and others fail. I would definitely recommend it. It really
Makes you thing about how we have prioritized cars over the people that live in our cities and towns. It’s time to rethink what we have done. The loneliness epidemic facing our country was exacerbated by COVID, but has also allowed us to focus and understand where we have messed up in our city planning. The suburban experiment has failed us by isolating us to our private homes and the internet while removing us from our neighbors. We must get out and rebuild our communities to reverse these trends before it’s too late. We must rebuild our public spaces and add great public transportation options.

Best part of any trip for work or pleasure is meeting new locals and hanging out. I always try and talk to the locals when I’m at a new place and if possible, have a drink with them.

While reading “The Great Good Place” by Ray Oldenburg, I came across the quote below which really hits the nail on the head on how we now are more lonely, isolated and divided. We need go back to doing things for the greater good, invest in our public schools and public transportation. Build third places to connect our communities. We need to listen to the entire community.

“Gray finds that the emergence of "many rich men" corresponds with the debasing of public facilities. The American rich "prefer not to avail themselves of services that are provided to the multitude." They hold negative views toward the public schools, which their children do not attend, and toward public trans-portation, which they do not ride. Worse, the millions of middle-class Americans who hope to become rich adopt these views and hope one day to be able to "purchase the splendid isolation for themselves." The comfort of the average urbanite and the conditions under which "ordi-nary people" live concern fewer and fewer people.” - Paul Gray, "Another Look at Democracy in America" Time Essay (16 June 1986).

I know it late, but just saw that Daniel Kahneman passed away this week. If you do not know who he is, I would recommend he long out some of his work. He was an incredible thinker.

Kahneman, author of the best-seller "Thinking, Fast and Slow," laid the foundation for a new field of research — behavioral economics — earning him the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002.

“How many Americans having “surfed” all the channels and, bored by it all, wouldn’t like to slip on a jacket and walk down to the corner and have a cold one with the neighbors? Ah, but we’ve made sure there’s nothing on the corner but another private residence . . . indeed, nothing at all within easy walking distance.”
Ray Oldenburg, The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffee Shops, Bookstores, Bars, Hair Salons, and Other Hangouts at the Heart of a Community

I finally got my copy yesterday and I have not been able to put it down. This book is fascinating on how it easily explains so much that is wrong with our society. The lack of third places has pushed us to secluded private lives that fuel loneliness and anxiety. There is no place to be light hearted and playful with others in our communities. It’s all been zoned away. We have to bring these places back GeForce it’s to late. Our youth suffer from social isolation with out places to meet new friends. Adults have the same issues.

I employ everyone to check this book out. It was originally written in 1989, but there is a new version coming. Check out the link below!

What is a third place? Why do you need a third place? And how can you find one? These are the questions we're all asking, and it was Ray Oldenburg who first gave a name to these precious human habitats. A third place is hangout where you can relax and be yourself

Please take a moment and sign the petition to stop the expansion. Cities are not drive-throughs. We all know putting highways through our cities was a disaster in the first place, so not double down on that mistake and expand them.
