🚨 CALLING ALL ANIMAL LOVERS, FARMERS, SCIENTISTS & SUPPORTERS! 🚨

Over 400 ostriches are at risk of being killed by the CFIA at Universal Ostrich Farms Inc. in Edgewood, BC.
Why? One single case of avian flu—months ago.
These birds are not for food. They are part of a rare, multi-generational genetic line used for research. Some have natural resistance to avian flu. Killing them isn’t protection—it’s destruction.

This weekend, join us for a peaceful protest & Ostrich Festival.
Stand with the farm. Stand with science. Stand with life.

“We won’t bury decades of life-saving genetics.”

Universal Ostrich Farms, a small remote farm in the beautiful Kootenays of British Columbia, has been ordered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to cull their entire herd of 400 healthy ostriches—animals they have raised for over 30 years. The farm urgently needs support to cover legal ...

To the CFIA and Concerned Canadians,

I am writing out of deep concern and frustration regarding the CFIA’s decision to cull over 400 ostriches at a family-run farm in Vancouver, British Columbia, following a single case of avian flu months ago.

This is not just any farm. These birds are not being raised for food—they are part of a valuable, multi-generational research effort. Some of these animals carry rare, natural immunities to avian flu that could be crucial in developing future protections and understanding disease resistance. Wiping them out would not only be a devastating loss to the family who has cared for them for generations, but also to science and Canadian agriculture as a whole.

Genetics matter. Just like prized cattle are bred for generations to strengthen herds, these ostriches carry genetic traits that could benefit future research and possibly save other flocks. If this cull goes forward, what kind of precedent are we setting? That one infection is enough to destroy an entire genetic line?

As a proud Canadian, I am heartbroken and angry. The CFIA has a duty to protect public health, yes—but it also has a duty to act with reason, compassion, and common sense. Why not conduct further research? More testing? More containment strategies? Why go straight to extermination?

Government leaders and Members of Parliament are aware of this situation—and many agree: killing these birds is not the answer. We are asking—no, demanding—that the CFIA halt this plan and consider alternative actions. Protect the future, don’t destroy it.

Sincerely,
[A Concerned Canadian / Your Name if you’d like]
