Tinnitus has long been a problem for people working in the music industry. For those frequently working at events, performing live or simply attending gigs, the continual exposure to loud noise can have a detrimental effect. Recent years has seen the industry wise-up and whilst a number of large-scale campaigns have raised our awareness of Tinnitus, the dangers of sounds damage are not always at the forefront of our thoughts.

If you’re continually exposed to loud sounds, you should consider using earplugs to protect and help prevent tinnitus.

Tips for Gig Goers !

1. Earplugs don’t completely block the sound out and you will still be able to hear live music whilst wearing them. Some earplugs may even make the music sound better.

2. Be kind to your ears by not standing near the event speakers.

3. Drinking water will help keep you hydrated and prevent overheating which will aggravate the ears.

4. Take a break. Give your ears the chance to recuperate by taking short breaks throughout the evening.

Invest in Noise Cancelling Headphones !

Noise cancelling headphones are a great option for those that listen to music for long periods of time. Using these will enable you to block out everyday noise that generally results in having to turn the volume higher and as a result, will allow you to listen to music at a lower level through your headphones.

The general safety advice given for headphone use states that you should never put the volume past 60% and should only listen to music for a maximum of 60 minutes per day, however this is the recommended use for smaller earbud headphones. Larger headphones are said to be safer for your hearing, whilst noise-cancelling earphones will provide the most protection.

Noise Protection TIPS for DJs !

ALWAYS carry some plugs on your house / car keys … if you’re in a loud environment please wear them, it actually makes conversation easier in loud environments and protects your ears at the same time. If anybody wants to have a career in entertainment / music / construction, wearing ear plugs is as vital as wearing a seatbelt if you wish to drive a vehicle.
