The theater was inaugurated with the name of Teatro Guzmán Blanco, on April 7, 1885 by Antonio Guzmán Blanco. Its construction was started in 1876 by the French architect Esteban Aricar and completed from 1879 by the Venezuelan Jesús Muñoz Tébar. At the inauguration, a performance of the opera El troubadour was offered, performed by Giuseppe Verdi, with the Afortunar Corvaba Italian Opera Company.

El teatro fue inaugurado con el nombre de Teatro Guzmán Blanco, el 7 de abril de 1885 por Antonio Guzmán Blanco. Su construcción fue iniciada en 1876 por el arquitecto francés Esteban Aricar y completada a partir de 1879 por el Venezolano Jesús Muñoz Tébar. En la inauguración se ofreció una representación de la ópera El trovador que fue realizada por Giuseppe Verdi, con la Compañía de Ópera Italiana Afortunar Corvaba.
