We mentioned that we plan to integrate the history of the Headly Inn with our winery theme. If you do a google search for Headley Inn, you will get pages of results. There are numerous different and interesting pictures of the Inn over the 189 or so years of its existence. In fact, you will find a different photo, print or illustration in every room of the Headley. Because of this, we decided to not use a picture of the Inn on our wine label, but focus on a famous piece of the Inn’s history. This is a photo of our inspiration for our wine label. It is the famous grapevine theme painted on the grand staircase in the Inn. It was originally painted circa 1833-35 and the stairs have some interesting stories associated with them.

In fact, it is the front cover photo on Cyndie Gerken’s book “Marking the Miles Along the National Road Through Ohio”. The Headley Inn signature wine will be named for it! Any guesses as to what the name may be?

We have not published much lately because we are transitioning the Inn into a craft winery this Spring. We plan to highlight all of the history that we have as our theme. AND we have a ton of it! Looking through our history collections, we came across this map. Did you know the Headley was home to a very famous hunt club in the early and mid 1900’s. Check out this map from 1947.

Hello friends and followers. We have not posted in a while so we thought we would give a quick update on the last day of Summer. I know, it has flown by as has the last 18 crazy months. The B&B has recovered very well over the Summer. We have added options for private breakfast that probably helped. We discontinued weddings for now but have had many very nice private events inside the Headley. We will continue hosting private parties throughout the Fall and Winter. We are also planning to open with brand new offerings next May so stay tuned! Happy Fall everyone.

We are very saddened to hear of the passing of Alexander Smith "Smitty" Howard. Smith was the last surviving member of the iconic family that ran the Headley Inn as a famous five star restaurant from 1922 to 1960. Smith stayed very connected to the Headley Inn after moving to Florida many years ago. He came to visit and stay with us every year after we purchased the Inn in 2015. He shared all of his fond memories of growing up in Cliff Rock House and working for his mother and aunt at the Headley Inn and gifted us with several invaluable items from the glory days of the Headley. We will be sure to pass along all of his stories with the Headley Inn history to the next generation. We will miss you Smith!

Our Story

The Headley Inn is a historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. It has served as an INN and Tavern in the 1800’s and was a nationally ranked five star restaurant in the 1900’s. We reopened it as a Bed and Breakfast and quaint wedding venue in 2016. Our goal is restore the Headley Inn to it’s role as a must visit destination in Muskingum County and on the Historic National Road. We can host wedding, reception, anniversary or other significant life event. Our venue can be customized to meet you specific theme. We can accommodate up to 100 guests. We create an incredible guest experience by providing a unique historic venue. We are a 100 % veteran owned business (USMC and USAF).
