is adding a Special Ladies Only Level 1 Beginner to Intermediate Group Clinic with special guest co-coach Melissa Fike this autumn down in Richmond, Ohio! The cost of this Clinic will be $385 compared to the normal Group Clinic cost of $450. The Ladies Clinic will mirror our normal Level 1 schedule on Saturday (8 to 4-ish) and we plan to complete session 2 on Sunday around 1pm.

Melissa and Kane grew up in a little town on the PA border and they played middle school football together! If you came out to this year's Fools Ride Rally she ran sweep for Kane on the Dual Sport Moderate routes each day.

Melissa has been riding for over 25 years spending decades accumulating seat time on a multitude of terrain including hare scrambles, motor cross tracks, and street bikes. Her comfort zone has always been off road tackling technical terrain.  A mother of 3, daughter of 13 and 12 year old twin boys, she's had the privilege of teaching them how to ride as well as coaching youth competitive soccer. Melissa is genuinely excited to pass on her motorbiking knowledge with patience and a zero judgement zone.

I didn't take a lot of pics but I had a great time with Walt at his 1-day Private Clinic yesterday! A beautiful day for some motorbiking skills and drills!

We offer private 1 and 2 day Clinics, 1 person or 1 person with 1-2 buddies (for bigger groups or longer sessions please reach out to the email listed below). Private Clinics have a similar set up as the group clinics but we can work on things specifically desired. We can do a Level 1, Level 2, combination of the two, or a more advanced session depending on what the rider(s) wants to cover. We can work on basic skills & drills, lean more off-road, aggressive gravel, hill climb/descent, rocky terrain, water crossings, moto-camping and drills with a loaded bike, basic roadside maintenance such as tire/tube changes, etc.

Reach out to [email protected] for more information and to schedule your private session!

Are you looking for heavy lean to street riding with a bit of dirt and gravel? Something like classic Adventure Touring with a loaded bike, many miles, and comfort being key. Or is it more of a balanced ADV thing? Some pavement, some dirt and gravel roads, and nothing super technical. How about a little ADV Dual Sporting? That would be pavement, dirt and gravel roads, but also trail riding of some sort (i.e. OHV/OHM trails, Drivable Trails, and other off-road style riding). Or are you trailering your bike and really leaning more on that “Dual Sport” side of the whole ADV Dual Sporting thing?

Those four subcategories of Adventure Motorcycling can have very different crowds attracted to them and different needs when it comes to bike, tire, farkle, thing. Do you want to be in one or more of those subcategories? Or are you working your way through them with the goal of some level of trail riding? Or do you want to farkle the hell out of the bike with the latest gadgets and gnarliest looking tires to impress your friends at Starbucks? These are all questions that riders must honestly answer.

The Four ADV Subcategories:

Classic ADV Touring - heavy lean to street riding with a bit of dirt and gravel, many miles, and comfort being key.

Balanced ADV - some pavement, some dirt and gravel roads, and nothing super technical.

ADV Dual Sporting Light - pavement, dirt and gravel roads, as well as trail riding in small doses (i.e. OHV/OHM trails, Drivable Trails, and other off-road style riding).

ADV Dual Sporting Heavy - limited to no high speed sustained highway (freeway, interstate, etc.), minimal pavement, often trailering your bike and really leaning more on that “Dual Sport” side of the whole ADV Dual Sporting thing.

Those four subcategories of Adventure Motorcycling can have very different crowds attracted to them and different needs when it comes to bikes, tires, set-up, skillsets, etc. Some folks will concentrate on one category, some like to change it up and try to spend time in each of the four. To each their own.

Appalachian ADV motorcycle classifications: Adventure (ADV), Dual Sport, Dirt Bike, Little Bike.

ADV bikes are a classification of motorcycles that will utilize paved roads as well as dirt and gravel roads. They are generally larger in scale and can be ridden comfortably for many miles and multiple days including living off of the bike or moto-camping. They can cruise on interstate for miles, scrape pegs in the twisty pavement, and take you into the wilderness on roads less traveled.

Dual Sport bikes are a classification of motorcycles that will utilize paved roads, dirt/gravel roads, and trails (i.e. off-road surfaces). They are generally smaller in scale and are designed to be more off-road oriented but street legal to allow riders to utilized paved, gravel, and dirt roads to connect trail riding opportunities.

Dirt Bikes are any motorcycles that are not street legal and solely used for off-road riding. Little Bikes can be street legal (and utilized for ADV &/or Dual Sport style riding) or small dirt bikes (aka Pitbikes). Some of our Rallies will have special routing, group rides, and/or events utilizing Little Bikes.

ADV Dual Sporting (AKA Dual Sport Moderate or Dual Sport Hard) is the art of taking the larger ADV bikes on Dual Sport terrain challenging the rider's skill and endurance as well as challenging the engineering of the machine and any completed modifications.

Loops built for our Rally style events can be labeled as ADV, Dual Sport Moderate, and Dual Sport Hard. ADV utilizes paved, dirt, and gravel roads and generally will include optional off-road Challenge Areas. Dual Sport Moderate includes "ADV friendly-ish" off-road riding in the main routing as well as terrain found in basic ADV riding. Dual Sport Hard routes can include all of the above as well as more rugged and technical terrain (i.e. single track and terrain more suited for Dual Sport and/or Dirt Bikes) and generally speaking may only be open to the smaller Dual Sport bikes or more advanced/expert ADV riders.

ADV bikes can be ridden like Dual Sport and Dual Sport bikes can be ridden like ADV. Customization and modifications can be made to just about any bike to make them more ADV-Tour worthy, more gravel road worthy, or more off-road oriented. At past rides we have had all manners of bikes including an off-road customized Honda Shadow and Harley Dyna all the way to Honda Groms and Monkeys! You bring it, we'll help you put it through its paces!

Off-road vs On-road... I have attempted to tackle this in several places on the website and recently updated the FAQs for Appalachian ADV Events.

How do you classify each surface type in your rides?
The different surface types Appalachian ADV uses for its routing includes on-road and off-road.

On-road surfaces include pavement, gravel roads, and dirt roads that are generally considered "maintained" (these can include easy-going 2-track). These are generally state, county, and township roads as well as forest service/fire roads that require plated bikes and "M" endorsed driver's licenses.

Off-road surfaces include drivable trails (i.e. Jeep trails or rough 2-track), off-highway vehicle (OHV) or off-highway motorcycle (OHM) trails including single track, other dual sport-type trails, and are generally considered "unmaintained" (although some trail systems will occasionally perform maintenance on pieces or sections to allow continued use). These types will also require plated bikes and/or a trail pass from a forest service agency.

The terms "off pavement", "no pavement riding", "unpaved routes", and "off tarmac" are used to describe any type of riding that is solely on loose surfaces such as dirt/gravel roads, drivable trails, OHV/OHM, and other less than ideal traction surfaces.

The word "off-road" has been misused by many riders, bike & aftermarket manufacturers, and industry personnel (media, aftermarket sales, etc.). Some will use off-road to describe "off pavement" riding. When using "off-road" the definition actually means not on a road and generally down some type of rugged trail. Dirt and gravel roads are roads and require street legal bikes and should not be considered "off-road".

There is a difference between ADV/Dual Sport off-road and Dirt Bike off-road. The terrain accessible by ADV/Dual Sport versus a Dirt Bike is different. Street legal terrain is generally not accessible to a Dirt Bike but, depending on the bike, some Dual Sport bikes cannot dive as deep in to the trails as a purpose built 2-stroke dirt bike*. The connotation sparked when using "off-road" is a trail, drivable trail, singletrack, and/or some other rugged terrain. Using the word "off-road" in non-off-road riding can cause confusion and shadow the true nature of a particular ride or riding style.

*To note: the rider is usually the limiting factor, not the bike, but the average rider will need to choose a purpose built bike with the right tires and general set-up. If riding a truely off-road ride on rugged terrain (i.e. OHM trails including singletrack, obstacles such as logs, creek crossings, rock gardens, hill climbs and descents) would you rather take a Yamaha XT-250 or a KTM 250 XC-W?

The dividing line as seen by Appalachian ADV: you need different riding techniques and skills for pavement riding, dirt/gravel road riding, and off-road riding. That is why we love Adventure and Dual Sport riding!

The region you are in does make a difference. There are township/county dirt roads in certain states that have been left unmaintained and could be considered "off-road" (i.e. sections of the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway in Kentucky or sections of the Infamous Adventure Routes in West Virginia). These roads have been turned into Drivable Trails, requiring some level of off-road skills and will still require a street legal bike.

The conditions of gravel roads, dirt tracks, and the various off-road trails can change with the seasons and the weather. Paved roads of various disrepair should also find cause for caution. Appropriate mental awareness and the proper precaution should be taken when the various surfaces are wet, leaf-covered, or snowy/icy.

●○●○●○●
It has always bugged me. Seeing tire manufacturers that are selling an obvious street tire but putting the word off-road on the sidewall. Or an article talking about dirt roads but using off-road to try and hook more readers.

Confusion is built in newer riders when we use inappropriate words to describe things.

Let me know any thoughts...

What is True Adventure Riding? Whatever gives YOU an adventure. It is a personal experience.

Appalachian ADV Charting parts less known, finding nature's hidden treasures, dirty roads and gnarly tracks, forgotten locations and places lost to time.... I am trying to take advantage of you. Tap into your desire to explore. An insatiable need to experience life, nature, and the adrenaline filled desire to twist the throttle.

The ADV motorcycle as the great equalizer, strips prejudice of wealth, socioeconomic status, race, creed and allows shared experiences. Community building. We are all Americans and need to find pathways to collaborations, not more BS to divide. Appalachian ADV wants to lay a trail ahead of you to help find these.

The sport of motorcycling is not about the bike but who you become when riding. - excerpt from US Motorcycle Coaching Association Manifesto

Private Clinic action down in Fools Ride Territory! We offer 1 and 2 Day Private Clinics, 1 person or 1 person with 1-2 buddies (for bigger groups or longer sessions please email Kane).

Our Clinics can be held at Lake Way Powersports (formerly Street Track n' Trail) in Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania and in Fools Ride Territory near Richmond, Ohio with an US Motorcycle Coaching Association Certified Riding Coach!

Our goal is to push your limits and get you out of your comfort zone a bit to help build confidence in your machine and your own skills. We keep the group clinic rider to coach ratio small in order to semi-customize your experience and to help build a temporary team of riders. We are all there to help pick up your bike and your spirits when the bike inevitably takes a closer look at the ground. This ADV Ride Clinic is intended to familiarize riders with the theory, physics, and skills necessary to ride ADV & Dual Sport bikes on gravel and dirt surfaces. We do not expect riders to master every drill at the conclusion of the course but to have a solid foundation, recognition of weak spots, and the ability to take these theories and drills home allowing continued practice to build upon the riders' skills. Our clinics are designed to have a more practical approach and hit basic fundamentals so that riders can gain a solid foundation, experience, and confidence in their machines and themselves.
