When you think of fall flowers, mums are probably the first thing that comes to mind. The heirloom chrysanthemums we grow here are a little different from the round porch mums you see everywhere!
These varieties were bred in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with all different shapes, textures, and colors. Some are huge single blooms and some are sprays of multiple on a stem. They fell out of popularity when traditional porch mums took over in the 60’s, but specialty growers have been finding them for the last decade or so and are bringing them back to us. I’m so glad to be growing part of some flower history and share them with you. This first picture is “Blush Strokes” and she’s gorgeous.
They’re also the very last flowers to bloom here, which makes them extra special. They bloom only when the days get short, and a hard frost can end the blooms overnight. With frost in the forecast, this weekend could be your last chance to enjoy them this season! We’re hoping we can cover them and keep the season going, but you never know what Mother Nature will bring ❄️
If you’ve been meaning to stop by for flowers, this is the time! They’re the flowers I’ve been looking forward to most this year and they don’t disappoint. I’d love for you to see these beauties before they’re gone😍
“Pumpkin Eyes” just starting to bloom
“Whippoorwill”
“Fall Charm”
Our slightly chaotic heirloom mum patch, with a couple still waiting to bloom as the days continue to get shorter. Hoping they bloom before frost!
“Whippoorwill” has opened up more and colors are changing as they mature
