Sarah Mills '21 has just been accepted as a Deep Ecology Fellow at Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary (United Plant Savers)
artist-in-residency program in Rutland, Ohio this spring!! 🌻

On behalf of Antioch College, congratulations on your accomplishment!! 🌼🌸

~During her time at Antioch College, Sarah has been combining art, ecology and the environment in a variety of her classes: creating botanical illustrations for a class Materia Medica in the Antioch Apothecary: Teas and Tinctures, Syrups and Salves course. She also created 28 ceramic bowls for each of her classmates in the Antioch Harvest course.

~At United Plant Savers, Sarah will be creating multi-dimensional Materia Medica, plant guide, and spell book - incorporating large scale gauche and multimedia creations on cold-pressed water paper. Her work will be published in the annual Journal of Medicinal Plant Conservation.

This residency falls right in line with Sarah's self-designed major: "Exploring and Protecting the Natural World through Visual Arts." Sarah's artist residency will provide her with the real-world experience needed to further her artistic expression. i make things when i need to express my feelings in positivity instead of using negative outlets. life has been rough lately but making things like this helps to make me smile. this whole experience of creating this was so meaningful to the steps i’m taking toward a happy life. i am trying to ground a home in yellow springs, and this let me do that while leaving a place for me to visit you. to talk to you about our friends. to ask you my questions. i’m trying to watch over for you while you watch over for us. thank you sarah for encouraging to make this. to danielle for the idea. and to stefan & teddy for coming with me on the adventure, where we took one of my mind “clearing” drives, to place this rock in the woods. ~ and the days turn to years and it hasn’t stopped yet~

flower pressings up in the art science building at antioch. we will have a show tomorrow from 5-7. come out ~

another flower press with gouache on top. this time the flanders poppy.
i tried out using a printing press this time. it didn’t work so well until the flower petal started to break down. once it did, it became a little ball of color that lasted forever. this little project was super fun. i definitely got lost in it for awhile.

sometimes, we must cut off a part of ourselves so that we can regrow, relearn, release. it’s a sacrifice for a better version of ourselves. to become a butterfly, we must first go into our cocoon and reform. antioch is my cocoon. antioch is my catalyst.

humans are the only animal aware of their inevitable demise and what do we do with that knowledge. we seem to panic. there are qeusrions we won’t ever be able to answer. i guess i’m trying to learn something from my skull obsession, reflect on life’s biggest questions, reflect on death, appreciate death.

the first painting i made, before i knew of georgia o’keeffe, was a yellow rose. my painting instructor, when i was finished with the painting, told me that it looked like o’keefe’s blue rose painting. i became obsessed with her. i found out yesterday that the MFA, Boston has several of her pieces, so today i sought them out. this was, of course, my favorite. @ Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
