We took a ride down to Athens, Ohio yesterday. It was such a perfect day with Phil. Green tufted rolling hills, and farmland patches with small farms and small communities all along the route. Athens itself is quite hilly. A fun change of scenery from our much flatter Columbus .

This is the time, after the leaves have made their curtain call and then left the branches of the summer, when I begin to dream of spring. I do enjoy winter and it's cozy evenings, bowls of hearty soup and getting tucked in bed early to hide in the latest novel. I enjoy walking in the crunch of foliage and seeing through the branches. And when I pass my neighbor's bare gardens, it is a pleasure to see instead the sleeping bulbs who lie in wait for spring, as I do. Winter is an important respite of the labors of the harvest and putting away the trowels and garden supports. It is the persistent grey and freezing temperatures which seem to overstay their welcome. Let's have winter, for the avid skiers, and snowbirds, and snowmen makers! But can spring come a bit sooner and stay a while longer, please?

Katie's Bat Mitzvah was a true celebration! Here are a few of the arrangements and details. Her turquoise and lavender color theme was expressed in many ways. Featured flowers: natural blue hydrangea, lavender and light purple stock, fuji mums, scabiosa, larkspur, statice, sweetheart spray roses, tulips and daisies! It was a joy and a privilege to work with Katie, her Mom and Grandmothers.

This coming event season is getting quite busy! A number of weddings and other events have recently booked with me for either the planning, invitations, flowers or all of these services. Thinking about and planning for happy events helps get me through the winter. While I layer my sweaters and socks, thoughts of sunflowers, roses, peonies and gardenias fill my thoughts and warm my heart.

Here in Columbus we are entering the "wedding season". Warmer and sunnier weather along with longer days makes this one of the best times for any special event, and since long ago the season for weddings. Watch for Brides and Grooms having their pictures taken in our city's most scenic and urban spaces. Our Parks are especially popular for taking wedding portraits and groupings. We can respectfully enjoy the happiness and pleasure on the faces of newly married couples - from
a respectable distance. I never get tired of watching this scene : laughing and happy young couples and a trail of busy bridal party members holding fresh flower bouquets and smiling for the camera!

Olive has been a traditional symbol of victory, purity and peace since ancient civilization. The hardiness of the leaves and branches as well as the silvery light green color make it a great addition to flower crowns, garlands, wreaths, corsages, boutonnieres or just floral arrangements in general.

Interesting Facts:

The olive tree is an evergreen and can live up to 2000 years with an average life span between 300 and 600 years. One of oldest olive trees in the world is found on the island of Crete. The tree is about 4,000 years old and still producing fruit!
In Ancient Greece, the Olympic Winners were awarded crown wreaths of olive since olive trees were abundant in Olympia. Medals weren't introduced until 1896.
According to the biblical story in Genesis, a dove was released by Noah after the flood in order to find land. It came back carrying an olive branch in its beak, telling Noah that there was land somewhere.
The olive branch has long been regarded as a symbol for peace. It appears on the national flags of seven nations, four US states and the flag of the United Nations.
It has a year-round availability.

I don't usually get to photograph the services themselves at mitzvahs, but yesterday I had the honor of shooting Max's at Congregation Beth Tikvah! Mazel tov to Max on his accomplishment! More images coming soon.
