Today I( closed the book on downsizing my old computerized light display. I sold the last of the equipment that was no longer needed. Some stuff sold quickly while other stuff lagged in interest and I just donated it to other hobbyist. I figured if their displays created smiles, then that would be super cool.

I no longer have an expensive hobby to keep me off the streets. I used to do a lot of woodworking, then water garden and koi pond, followed by the computerized light shows. But being visually impaired, it's best for me to stay off of streets anyway.

It's been cold and snowy the past few weeks and I don't care since there's no display to tear down. . My wife never liked "light crap" hanging on her house so I was motivated in getting the display down and packed away as soon as I could in early January. I needed porch roof access to tear down 2nd story lights. Some times nature took care of having a dry roof, other times I had to work at it.

It's been several months since I decided to pull the cord on my computerized Christmas display and come back in 2026 with a downsized, easier to set up display.

It's Christmas eve day and it's the first time I have missed not having the display running. Many families make it a tradition to visit light displays on Christmas eve and I'm no longer part of that tradition, at least for this year. It was always the heaviest visitation night of the year.

Far and away the best list of Christmas light displays in the Twin Cities is the "2025 Minnesota Holiday Display Guide", do a web search, you'll find it. Hundreds of displays and even Woodbury stepped up this year. For the past 9 years, it's been just Holiday Lights of Woodbury and Crazy Lights, now there's 8 or so Woodbury displays listed.

While I hit a mental wall with the old display, I haven't lost the spirit. I just receive a 11 ft Olaf inflatable. I've been eying one for the past few years but since it was sold in 2019, it's been kind of pricey on the secondary market, but found a good price for a new one. I no longer have to worry about blocking the lights that were on the first level of the house so I can now put some larger inflatable up in the yard. Kids love Olaf, I now will have 3 of them. As one of my granddaughters said a few years ago, you can never have enough Olafs.

This spring I will be installing permanent lights on the garage and 2nd story eves. These lights will have led puck clusters ever 16 inches and will provide a sconce type effect on the siding. Maybe a puck on each of the porch columns or a string above the garage door.

I will be able to use built-in Christmas themes on these lights to add color and motion to the Christmas display. You can sync these lights to music so I decide the keep my FM transmitter setup which I was trying to sell.

Not missing the actual Christmas display, but I am missing not seeing guest outside, hearing the radios and kids laughing.

I have been thinking a lot about a paired down display for 2026. The front yard, left of the driveway will remain much as it was before, with the 12 ft tree, grouping of 6 ft branch trees and all of the inflatables.

With the removal of the large tree in this area, I will have room to move several branch trees and 8 ft tree from the right side to the left side of drive. Other than putting my 4 ft wreath on the garage, no other lights from the old display will be used. Because of my vision issues, having the display concentrated in one area should help by not having to stumble around the entire yard and climbing ladders. We plan on installing permanent lights on the house eves but more on this later.

This was always my favorite part of the old display and will continue to provide a nice photo opportunity for families. Merry Christmas Mike

It's happening sooner than I planned or hoped for but I've decided to no longer do a Halloween and Christmas computerized light display.

While I had setup the Halloween display for this year,I found myself mentally tstruggling as I started the Christmas setup. Being visually impaired and with the vision continuing to deteriorate, I just hit a mental wall that the display was getting to be more frustrating than enjoyable.

I know this will leave a empty feeling for many visitors who makde my display a yearly tradition . I will miss the interaction I had with guest and some of the heart warming stories theyshared with me. But I'm at peace with the decisions and have planned for a pared down, more static display in 2026. Maybe in a few weeks I'll share what it might look like. Thanks for the support over the past 12 years. Mike

With it raining at 6pm, I thought Halloween night was going to be a bust. A few came while it was raining and with it stopping at 6:30, we had a decent group of treaters coming by, maybe 75--100 kids. I had to cover and uncover 5 props from the rain and was able to drag another one into the garage.

I'll start installing the rest of the Christmas
light show this week. Nice part of this install is that there's no ladder work, that's all done during the Halloween display. I'll do a kickoff post later this month, promoting the display.

My cauldron stirring witch is the first prop I ever built, about nine years ago. With little trick or treaters in mind, I keep all my props away from the driveway and sidewalk. There's still a few little ones that wouldn't come up to the house so it's curbside candy delivery.

At night with a floodlight on the witch and with fog and alittle light in the cauldron, it does look pretty cool. The most challenging part of the build was finding a really large cauldron. I had to buy a 4 pack of various sized cauldrons, just to get the largest one.

Alot of haunters build them bigger, but Here's my smaller version of a Monster In A Box prop. Easier to store and let me use a cheap car door lock mech for bouncing the box lid. Changed the motion sensor trigger this year so a guest has to get pretty close before waking the monster.

I had a good week in getting caught up on fall chores. Halloween light display up, sprinklers blowned out, perennial beds cleaned up and the yard generally winterized. Gee Mike, what do you do with all your spare retirement time?

So with the rain today, started pullingprops out of storage for setup the day of Halloween. I set everything up in the garage before hand and test them out. 12 year old granddaughter loves setting them up so she will be over this week to help out a little. Here's one of my DIY props that goes out Halloween day.
