This extraordinary discovery was made during construction in Tennessee, where researchers unearthed a collection of tools that reveal the deep history of body art in North America. The kit included sharpened turkey bones stained with pigment, which would have been used as tattooing needles, along with half-shells believed to have held the ink. Together, these artifacts form the world’s oldest known tattoo set, dating back around 5,000 years.

The find sheds light on the cultural traditions of ancient Native American communities, for whom tattooing likely held spiritual, social, or symbolic meaning. Tattoos may have served as markers of identity, rites of passage, or protective symbols. The careful crafting of the tools, combined with the preserved pigments, reflects both the artistry and the cultural importance of this practice.

Today, this tattoo kit not only deepens our understanding of early Native American life but also connects modern tattoo culture to its ancient roots. It reminds us that body art is far more than decoration it is a timeless form of human expression, carrying meaning, memory, and identity across thousands of years.

For years, tattoos have been a form of self-expression, but now researchers with the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah believe they have found a surprising health benefit: reduced skin cancer risk.

The researchers say that people with more than one tattoo session may have a decreased risk of the skin cancer melanoma, with one key cut out.
