Fascinating I love learning new things 🎇🎆

Happy 4th of July! Did you know that if you’ll be lighting off any fireworks today, you will actually be participating in a centuries-old religious tradition?

That’s right – while those colorful displays may seem like a fun and secular way to play with explosives, fireworks actually have a long and fascinating religious history.

Invented in ancient China, most historians believe that fireworks were first developed as a way to keep evil spirits at bay using loud noises, and developed from there.

This technology eventually reached Europe (likely courtesy of a not-so-friendly visit from the Mongols) in the mid-13th century. In 1267, an English monk named Roger Bacon recorded seeing what scholars think were firecrackers – comparing the objects to lightning and thunder.

Fast-forward to the year 1377, and we find records of fireworks being co-opted by the Vatican (small fireworks were used to add sparks around spiritual figures of angels and doves in religious plays designed to enchant the public).

Seeing how captivated their congregations were, the shows just keep growing and growing. By the 1400s, perhaps the greatest early European fireworks show (and based on written accounts, perhaps one of the grandest and most expensive firework shows of all time), called “the Girandola,” took place in Rome at the papal residence of the Castel Sant’Angelo.

People who saw it compared it both to a vision of heaven falling to Earth, and also likened it to the terrifying and apocalyptic fires of hell. Fun!

Although no longer the pope’s residence, fireworks are still set off at Sant’Angelo to this day (pictured below).

So if you’ll be lighting a firework or two today, know that you aren't just celebrating America – you're also paying tribute to hundreds of Chinese priests and Italian bishops who invented the game centuries ago.
