A charity auction can be one of the highest-revenue moments of your entire fundraising year.
Or it can stall, feel awkward, and leave money on the table.
The difference almost always comes down to planning and presentation β not the items themselves.
Here's what drives results at a well-executed charity auction:
π― Curate, don't just collect β Quality over quantity. A focused package of 8β12 well-presented items outperforms a table of 40 mediocre donations every time.
π Tell the story behind each item β "Two nights at a beachfront resort" is fine. "Two nights at a beachfront resort donated by a longtime community partner who has supported your mission for 10 years" is compelling.
π€ Your auctioneer is your most important hire β A professional auctioneer who understands your mission and your room can double your results. This is not the role for a volunteer.
β±οΈ Timing matters β Run your live auction before dessert, not after. Energy and attention are highest earlier in the evening.
π§ Follow up β Thank your winners personally. They're your most engaged donors.
What's the most creative auction item you've ever seen at a fundraising event? We'd love to hear it. β¬οΈ
