(DEC 03, 2021) VETERAN OF THE DAY – Marvin Cornett, a 99-year-old World War II veteran finally gets his medals.

Shaky but sturdy, retired Sgt. 1st Class Marvin Cornett stood tall in a uniform he hadn’t worn in more than half a century to receive an overlooked award he’d been due since 1944.

Donning his “Eisenhower jacket,” a green, waist-length jacket worn by the famous general in the later stages of World War II, a garrison cap and matching trousers, Cornett was the center of attention at American Legion Post 84, in Auburn, California, Monday for an outdoor ceremony in which he finally received his Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.

Cornett, 99, came in not an inch shorter or a pound heavier than in his fighting shape of three-quarters of a century past, when he stood 5-foot-2-inches tall and carried 110 pounds on his frame.

More than 77 years ago, after having helped capture Sicily, completing a nighttime combat jump in the rain and seeing heavy combat during the Allied invasion of Italy, Cornett was wounded during a combat assault at Anzio on Jan. 31, 1944, which pulled him from the front lines.

His wounds, severe enough to send him home, were listed in unit paperwork. But in the blur of wartime bureaucracy, they were lost.

Cornett served in Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne.

“You represent everything that is great with this country. You represent everything that is great with paratroopers,” Donahue said. “You are the 82nd Airborne Division.”

After his injury, Cornett was sent back to Fort Benning, Ga., to serve as an instructor at the Army’s Airborne School. It was there he met and fell in love with a new kind of soldier, Eloyce Miller of the Women’s Army Corps, who’d come to the base to work as a rigger, packing parachutes for the airborne training school.

Greenfield 4th of July Celebration with our troops and hero's in mind! Please attend!!!
The City of West Allis will host a Memorial Day Observance Ceremony on Monday, May 31 at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at 70th and National Avenue. Speakers, including Mayor Dan Devine will be joined by choral students from the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District who will perform “God Bless America” and the National Anthem. Miss West Allis will also be in attendance. For the safety of guests, masks or face coverings are strongly recommended. Socially distanced seating and hand sanitizer stations will be provided. After consulting with Tanner Paull American Legion Post 120, the Memorial Day Parade presented too many logistical challenges, and will not be held this year. Many of the organizations and performing groups have not been rehearsing in person. The City of West Allis is optimistic about hosting its Independence Day Parade on July 2 and fireworks on July 4 and is proceeding with planning these events with the safety of the public in mind. For the safety of guests, this morning's Tanner Paull American Legion Post 120 Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park has been canceled. To all those who have served, and those who continue to serve, we thank you for your service and wish you a Happy Veterans Day.
As we honor our veterans this Veterans Day, please note that all City buildings will remain open and garbage/recycling collection will not be impacted. Tanner Paull American Legion Post 120 will hold its Veterans Day Ceremony tomorrow at 11 a.m., at Veterans Memorial Park, 6900 W National Ave. In case of inclement weather, the short program will be held inside the Police Sub-Station at Vets Park. All are welcome.

Celebrate 100 years of Tanner Paull American Legion Post 120 on Nov. 9. Post 120 is named after 2 World War 1 veterans who served in the U.S. Army and were killed in action: Harold Tanner and John Leslie Paull. The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.
Got to go on the Honor Flight 6/1/2019. It was awesome! A visit with our former Post chaplain Will Dewsenberry! Got to participate in the Vietnam Moving Wall ceremony in Greenfield 5/24-5/27 2019. I was honored by Quilt's for Veteran's and given an awesome Quilt which I will cherish! Photo of the the Moving Wall @ 1:00am in the morning, awesome! Got to meet the comfort dog's for Vet's organization who provides a great source of healing for Veteran's in need!❤️
