Ghana Founders’ Day is celebrated every year on August 4. Much of Africa was under British rule by the 19th century. After fighting for the British in both world wars, leading educationalists and thinkers in the region formed the United Gold Coast Convention on this day in 1947, which played a major role in Ghana’s fight for independence. Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to claim independence, and others followed suit.
