Today is Cinco de Mayo. While many believe today is synonymous with Mexico’s Independence Day, this day commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, in which the Mexican army defeated the French army, which was seeking to gain control of the country. The Franco-Mexican conflict lasted until 1867.
The day is celebrated in Mexico with colorful outfits, parades, Mexican food and drink, and reenactments of the battle.
Mariachi Sirenas, an all-women mariachi group from Chicago, performed at the 2024 Holiday Folk Fair International. Check out a clip from one of its performances above.
