A program of the International Institute of Wisconsin, Holiday Folk Fair International is held annually in November, celebrating the heritage of the people living in southeastern Wisconsin with cultural music, food, dance, arts, and crafts. The three-day event features the All Nations Theater with traditional music and dance; the World Café offering traditional dishes; the International Stage wher

e young people perform their ethnic dances; the Tanzhauz where attendees dance and sing along with a variety of musical stylings; the Coffee House where patrons enjoy a beverage and baked goods while listening to talented musicians; Heritage Lane with unique traditions and customs through interactive exhibits; the International Bazaar, where cultural artifacts create a unique shopping experience; and the Chef’s Stage featuring local chefs preparing traditional cuisine. on Fri., Nov. 18; 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 19; and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Advance tickets are $12 each, with family four-packs for $44. Admission at the gate will be $16 for adults; $8 for children ages 6 to 12; with children five and under tadmitted at no charge. Today is Cinco de Mayo. While many believe today is synonymous with Mexico’s Independence Day, this day commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, in which the Mexican army defeated the French army, which was seeking to gain control of the country. The Franco-Mexican conflict lasted until 1867.

The day is celebrated in Mexico with colorful outfits, parades, Mexican food and drink, and reenactments of the battle.

to the bonsai exhibit at the 2024 Holiday Folk Fair! Presented by the Milwaukee Bonsai Society, the exhibit displayed various styles and types of bonsai trees and plants. Bonsai trees, popular in Japan and China, are associated with harmony, inner peace, balance, and positivity. Attendees were able to vote for their favorite tree.

April 28 marks Global Pay It Forward Day. This is a worldwide celebration of kindness with hopes to create a ripple of good that will continue throughout the entire year. Global Pay It Forward Day was created in 2007 as a celebration of how one small act of kindness can make a big impact in the world. After beginning in Australia, the holiday now spreads love and happiness in over 85 countries.

to the American Culinary Federation Chef’s Stage presented by TightSeal Exteriors and Baths at the 2024 Holiday Folk Fair International! This special attraction featured local chefs preparing traditional cuisine throughout the weekend. Audiences were able to see how to make Korean seaweed rice rolls, Filipino ground beef stew, Ecuadorian stuffed potato patties, Polish farmers cheese pancakes, and much more!

Today is part of International Dance Week. Cultural and traditional dance is a main attraction of the Holiday Folk Fair International! Dozens of ethnic groups come to the fair to share their cultural roots through movement. Check out Tradizione Vivente - The Italian Dance Group of Milwaukee, who performed several times at the 2024 Holiday Folk Fair International here.

April is National Arab American Month. Egypt is a predominately Arab country and was represented at the 2024 Holiday Folk Fair International. The Wisconsin Woodturners showed audiences the process of woodturning (seen here), which originated in Egypt and is an ancient craft in many cultures.

On April 10, we celebrate the heritage of Scottish Americans! The Scottish culture was appreciated at the 2024 Holiday Folk Fair International through dance. The Caledonia Scottish Dancers, accompanied by The Billy Mitchell Scottish Pipe Band, performed throughout the weekend at the Tanzhaus and the All Nations Theatre. Watch them in action here.

Today marks World Health Day. Led by the World Health Organization (WHO), this day promotes the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals around the globe; raises awareness about the health of the poor and less fortunate; and reminds us to be grateful for our health and better take care of ourselves.

This year’s theme of World Health Day is “Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures,” which urges the health community to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths, and to prioritize women’s longer-term health and well-being.
