When visitors head to the Spit in Homer, Alaska, their goal is likely to eat fish and chips, shop for local crafts and catch a fishing charter. But this little strip of land holds a lot of stories in its tiny footprint.

It was created as a glacier receded and left behind a mix of rocks sediment and soil, known as the terminal moraine. Since then, the Spit has seen coal and gold mining, a railroad along its length, and an earthquake which dropped it about 5 feet into the bay and damaged many of its buildings, including the iconic Salty Dawg Saloon.

This tiny stretch of land now is home to businesses, commercial fishing vessels, seabirds, marine mammals, and of course, tourists.

The Strip is just one reason to visit Homer, Alaska. Summer or winter - Homer is a special place to visit.

Driftwood Dreams was made for families and groups! We love that the teenagers used the game room!

With space to spread out, walkable to Bishop’s Beach and local favorite restaurants, all three units at Tidepool Treasure’s in Homer are a great homebase for a trip to Homer.

With airfares on the rise, this might be the summer for Alaskans to remember that we live in a pretty cool place with lots of space to explore. And with gas prices rising, it would be great to keep driving to a minimum (kind of hard in Alaska, I know).

We put together a guide to some of our favorite things to do within 1–2 hours of Wasilla and Palmer — hikes, glacier views, scenic drives, animal farms, waterfalls, Talkeetna, Hatcher Pass, and plenty of easy day trips that don’t require an airport, a rental car, or a full vacation budget.

We’ve stayed in a lot of vacation rentals and know that it’s the little things that make a stay feel comfortable.

Here is an easy Alaska day that we recommend to our guests for days when they don’t have a big hike or activity planned.

Start your morning in Palmer with a visit to either the or the . Both are fun, low-key ways to experience Alaska’s wildlife up close without committing to a full-day excursion. It is a great option for families or anyone who wants something memorable but not too strenuous.

Afterward, head into downtown Palmer for lunch. Blues is a great pick if you are craving fresh, cozy, locally loved food, while Palmer Alehouse is perfect for a relaxed lunch with a casual Alaska feel. Both are local favorites. If it’s a nice day, ask for a table on the patio at the Alehouse.

From there, make your way to Reflections Lake for an easy walk with beautiful views. The trail is flat, peaceful, and a great way to stretch your legs without turning the day into a major outing. Be sure to climb the observation tower for great views of the valley.

Save this for a slower Alaska day when you still want to get out, see something special, and enjoy a few local favorites.
