Earlier this week, I created a farewell arrangement for a family, very overwhelming time for all of us. 📖 On Friday, Olga presented her book in English in a beautiful space outside Bonjour Books DC (a huge thank you to owner Jennifer Fulton). The book is still for sale: order online or stop by the bookstore.

Fall has arrived and brought with it all the wonderful autumnal colors. White, bright yellow, orange, red, chrysanthemums (les chrysanthèmes) start to bloom and fill gardens with their happy faces. In France, however, this flower has a strong connotation with death. Brought originally from China in the late 18th century where the chrysanthemum symbolizes joy and positivity, they were ordered by French President Raymond Poincaré to be placed on the graves of the fallen in World War I on November 11, 1919 and since then have been associated with the dead. It later became the flower placed on tombs in France on La Toussaint (All Saints Day).

In anticipation of our Flower Workshop on Sat, Oct 23 with Ambiana, we will be talking about flowers each weekend, their French names and what they symbolise in France. 🌼🌹🌷 The first one in the series is lily-of-the-valley, which is "le muguet" in French. French people give this very first spring flowers to family and friends on May 1 as a token of good luck. The tradition is said to begin with King Charles IX who received a bunch of lily-of-the-valley as a token of luck and prosperity for the coming year. He liked the idea so much that he began the custom of offering lily-of-the-valley flowers to the ladies of his court each year. What a beautiful tradition!
