Since starting the company, Alex and her staff have worked in some of the region’s most prestigious venues, including Mandarin Oriental Hotel, The Hay Adams Hotel, Anderson House, Meridian House, Westin Grand Hotel, Peabody Library, River Farm, and The Four Seasons Hotel. Alex has also been heavily involved in the 2010 and 2011 NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) Galas. Alex graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a Bachelors Degree in Fashion Merchandise Management and began her career at W magazine in New York City. Margaret and Joe's tables ran long down the center of the room, dressed in soft blue linen against warm wood. White roses, delphinium, and queen anne's lace grew down the middle like something that had always been there. Tapers in glass, a baguette waiting at every seat, and a hand-lettered place card for each guest.

At the base of the tables, florals spilled onto the stone - the kind of detail no one expects to look down and find.

A few things I was reminded of, hosting my own birthday at home.

Set the table the night before if weather allows-your morning will thank you. Put the bar away from the food so guests naturally spread out.

Plan for heat: Mini fans, and cold drinks waiting when people arrive. And decide in advance what "done" looks like, so you can stop adjusting and start celebrating.

The most important one: build in a moment to sit down and look around. It goes quickly.

Even planners need the reminder.

For twenty years I have planned celebrations for other people. This summer, I planned one for myself-in my own backyard, at one long table, with the people I love most.

No ballroom. No venue walkthrough. Just the pool, the garden, florals I chose slowly, and an evening that unfolded exactly the way I always tell my clients it will: once the planning is done, you get to be a guest at your own party.

It turns out the advice holds.

Here's to the next decade of gathering people around tables.

For DeeDee and Kyle, the details were the whole story. A modern white altar piece designed to complement her bouquet. A table layered with burgundy, deep greens, and fruit—an artistic composition with just enough whimsy.

All of it set in a secret garden against a grand manor house, under a sky that glimmered as the sun went down.

Guests may not notice every choice. But they feel the sum of them.
