For years I avoided doing the coloring book because my routine was just like everyone else's. Then I learned a new approach. I wish I could take credit for this, but the routine was created by Tommy Johns and Dorian LaChance, two wonderful magicians I came to know through Kapital Kidvention. There is also a bit of business from Silly Billy and another bit from Christopher T. Magician (both of whom I've gotten to know through Ring 50 and Kapital Kidvention.) There is one important ingredient: It requires a coloring book with scribbles--I use the giant one by Danny Orleans or the themed ones by Jim Kleefeld. The gist of the routine, in case the audio is low, is that I claim to be the world's greatest coloring book artist and show the scribble scrabble FIRST. The kids object and we erase the colors and show the line drawings and finally the properly colored pages. Then I tell the kids I'm going to claim that I did this all by myself without them helping. The kids rebel and erase the colors. This is a fantastic routine and I'm so grateful to Tommy and Dorian for sharing it. I'm also thankful for Kapital Kidvention and the opportunity to get to know so many creative fellow kids magicians. (Tommy and Dorian gave me permission to share their routine).
