Walter Edward Washington, the first Mayor of DC and the first African American to become a chief executive of a major American city, fought tirelessly for the self-government of DC and left a legacy of unparalleled leadership, especially during the 1968 riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In 1976, Mayor Washington endorsed a new downtown convention center as a part of his economic development priority. In 2007, the city government renamed the Washington Convention Center to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center to honor the District's first mayor.
