🍂 Exploring the gentle pace of rural life is part of the Stella Homestead experience.

🚲 Some of our favorite places in nearby Waitsburg include Royal Block and Laht Neppur—and we also can recommend riding bikes into Waitsburg on the back roads.

So glad you took some time to explore the area during your stay, Bessie—and thanks for the kind words!

Toffee, our resident farm cat, is now in charge of the homestead since the passing of our beloved Calico.

As you can see, it’s an exhausting job that requires frequent breaks.

If you’re looking for a spot of sun, though, she’ll be your guide!

🌿 Toast to Teamwork 🍇

That’s a wrap on our second Riesling harvest at the Homestead! It’s always incredible to see how much work and heart go into gathering the fruit that will shape our next vintage. Every step of the process is truly a team effort.

Special thanks to Rob Wohr for leading the charge and sharing his expertise, ensuring each cluster was picked at just the right moment. Here’s to the crew, the vineyard, and the next beautiful chapter in our winemaking journey.

Now and then: On Mother’s Day in 1968 I was 5 years old and in first grade. I had made the paper flower on the table and the little black-and-silver photo my mom is holding. That sweet gift has hung on our dining room wall ever since. 🌸

My mother, known for her sense of style, is wearing her favorite 1960s housecoat which we brought back for her fashion show decades later. 👗

All these years later, the dining room table, the champagne glasses, and even the memories feel the same. Our house has always been filled with love, lilacs, and traditions that still live on today. 💐✨

In the 1950s, my parents raised more than 100 chickens here. 🐔

As wheat farmers, they needed to feed a big family and the harvest crew, so the chickens gave both meat and eggs. The same hen-laying bins now hold towels and books in the kitchen and bath. 🥚

In 2020, we cleaned out the coop and started giving it new life—repurposing the old wood, feeders, bins, and even the floor. The kitchen cabinets and farm sink came straight from Grandma’s kitchen, so a little piece of her is here too.
It’s one of five restored buildings on our property available to guests.

Sometimes we're amazed at who this homestead brings together. This year we had a group of six who came from Corvallis, Oregon, for the Pendleton Whiskey Music Fest. I learned that one of them is from Brazil, where I lived in the 90s, and it was a lovely surprise to speak Portuguese with him. It is a small world, and we love hearing the stories of our guests and sometimes finding unexpected connections!

Where It All Began

Cheryl Hansen is your host at Stella’s Homestead. Her great-grandfather, Robert William Leid, purchased his first farm on top of historic Coppei Mountain in 1889. The original blacksmith shop, sheds, and water cistern exist today. Over seven decades the family worked the wheat fields, originally with horse and mule-drawn combines, later using tractor-pulled combines, and then more mechanized equipment.

Cheryl’s parents, Jim and Geraine, married in 1947 and settled where Stella’s Homestead is located today, 2.5 miles from the original Leid Homestead. Stella’s Homestead grew out of the Hansen legacy of wheat and cattle farming on the Coppei, where Cheryl welcomes family and private events that are perfect for enjoying great music, food, wine, and community.
