There are a lot of waterfront restaurants in Hampton Roads, but is where you will find my family on almost a weekly basis. It’s easy, consistent and kid friendly.

Hampton Roads has some incredible women building really special things, and Mary Cook is absolutely one of them.

She founded in Chesapeake and created something that is genuinely unlike anything else in the area. Hands-on cooking classes where you actually learn real techniques, eat what you make, and have a really good time doing it.

The classes are perfect for a girls night out, a date night, or honestly just an excuse to get out of the house and do something different. Mary has built a space that feels welcoming no matter your skill level in the kitchen. The kind of place you bring a friend and leave already planning your next visit.

Courtney White McQuarrie opened in Norfolk, and it feels like stumbling onto a rustic dining room somewhere in the French countryside… except it’s right here in our backyard. She trained at Michelin-starred restaurants in Tuscany and New York, then came home and built something entirely her own.

The food is the kind that makes you slow down. She sources produce locally, bakes bread in house, and changes the menu with the seasons but the pasta limone stays. And honestly, it should never leave. It is my favorite dish in all of Hampton Roads. Full stop.

There’s something about the way Courtney cooks that feels personal. She’s right there at the kitchen bar, talking through the inspiration behind each dish while she’s making it. You leave knowing more than when you walked in, and you leave full in every sense of the word.

If you’re looking for a recommendation, start with the spaghetti limone. Then go back and try everything else.

Four years ago I came back to Virginia Beach, and I didn’t have a village. So I did what I do… I built something.

It started with Moms Night Out VB. And then it grew into something I never fully planned. The Annual Turkey Trot, Strawberry Fest at the Beach, The Landsby, and Birth Expo VB. I gravitated towards all of these concepts because they came from a deep desire to create the community I was craving for us and for other families.

The other pillar of these projects was the importance of small businesses. MNOVB and The Landsby partnered with hundreds of local small businesses over the past 4 years. Together we generated over $100,000 back into the local economy and tens of thousands more into local charities and families who needed it most. That part I will always be proud of.

Creating these events filled my cup along the way but it also unexpectedly emptied it greatly over time. Four years here taught me a lot about VB and community in general, and not all of it was what I hoped it would be. I came back home with so much heart and hope and some of what I found along the way gradually depleted those feelings.

On top of that, something shifted when I stepped into my corporate role. I had never done the 9-5 thing before and honestly never thought it was for me. But it turns out the right one can give you flexibility, presence, and the ability to provide for your family in a real way. I didn’t anticipate loving it. And I definitely didn’t foresee how much I’d want to protect the time outside of it for my family and nothing else.

I’ve made the decision to step back from basically everything. Fully. Not to pivot or rebrand… just to rest, and to let my family move into a new season with more freedom and a much more present mom.

I feel pretty confident that this event will for sure go down in history as our most controversial.

I have been pretty open with the fact that I am terrified of guns, of the people who are obsessed with them and of the people who possess them and have no business doing so. I am terrified of the amount of violence done to women and the amount of children we have lost to fi****ms in the wrong hands.

However, I am also a realistic person and a fully aware person that acknowledges our country has more guns than people and it will likely be that way forever. I am also aware that individuals use fi****ms for hunting to provide for their family and also as a competitive sport.

With that being said, this course was simply meant to help us feel educated and capable should we find ourselves in a situation with a basic hand gun.

We learned how to safely handle, how to empty the cartridge and of course how to shoot a hand gun. It was the most basic course meant to soften that first layer of anxiety that I think so many of us feel when even discussing guns.

Not using AI for this so bear with me.

Creating events out of thin air, connecting with businesses on the idea, designing content, managing the website and all the communication that comes with each of those is draining mentally and physically.

But somehow, all it takes is one event… the hugs, the laughs and more times than not, hearing, “I needed thisss” washes away any self doubt or the occassional thought that maybe this isn’t worth it.

The women who show up to these events are some of the most incredible people I’ve been lucky enough to meet since moving back to the area. They see the value in community and they make a conscious effort to show up. Without them The Landsby simply does not exist.

If you have come to an event and felt seen, felt like this was a new vibe that you hadn’t yet experienced in VB or felt like it was almost too easy to relax and enjoy the get together, I encourage you to come to show up again for yourself and the community.

Thank you all for being here. I can’t wait to continue to create experiences and opportunities for us to hang!
