We're still getting ready for you. I've got some good help...we're getting the trays emptied and the flowers arranged on the table. Signs made and the cash register going. Cleaning up here and there. We're looking forward to seeing you on Saturday and beyond.

It's always nice to find the sweet spot for a specific variety of flower. I've planted lantana in a little narrow space between the rock wall of our flower terraces and the sidewalk steps. Full sun through the middle hours of the day, It has been hardy there and can take some dryness.
I have a variety of lantana this year...so find your sunny spot and get ready for some great blooms.
Two varieties are bandana and bandalero...each having varied colors.
Bandalero is said to be larger and have more vigor.
Bandana stays a little more compact.
The lantana at Painted Earth Flowers will all have tags to tell you the specifics on their growing habits.

Yesterday's painting class with Brenda Scott was cozy, and we all enjoyed it. The scent of petunias. Bright sunshine. Had to shut the door quite a ways because of the strong wind wanting to blow our stuff around. Brenda demonstrated some of her favorite techneiqes and made us all feel comfortable enjoying the process of painting flowers. We decided it was a good way to relax, if you just enjoy the process and experiment with the possibilities.
Thanks for coming, Gale and Sherrie. Enjoyed our time together. Other participants all had the same last name and didn't travel far. It was enjoyable to have the little girls with us.
Thanks for giving us your time and talents, Brenda. It was fun watching you work! Brenda got to take a tray of flowers home to set on her bright sunporch until the nights quit freezing and the flowers can go out to their summer homes.

Painting Flowers with Brenda Scott is in two days. Comment here, message me on Messenger, or text me at 913-904-8681 if you want to attend. 10am in the Lower Greenhouse among the petunias with their wonderful aroma and amazing colors.

We need to get a head count so Brenda knows what supplies to bring. Let us know if you are comitted to coming. Men, women, children are welcome!

I'll have some grandchildren here, so make a date with your child or grandchildren to enjoy a couple of hours this Saturday morning. You'll be able to get a sneak peak at what I have growing, too.

The Calibrachoa are busting out their blooms in the Lower Level Greenhouse. The scent is lovely.

We are planning an event in this greenhouse, Saturday, April 12, a week from today. Painting with Brenda Scott. She will demonstrate painting flowers for us...and plans on guiding participants in painting a post card size flower painting. Starts at 10am. $10 will get you a place. Jon and I are soaking up some sun and warmth in sunny Florida before the flower plugs start arriving in a couple of weeks.
I love caladiums and decided to pick up a nice order of bulbs while we are here.

We traveled two hours inland through Florida farm country to the world headquarters of caladiums.
Florida grows 95% of the world's "farmed" caladiums. They have the absolute best soil for caladiums to propagate and flouris in. They called it "lake bottom" soil. I suppose from the days of Florida being mostly swamps.

We were happy to meet the family that owns Florida Boys Caladiums. Mom, Dad, and three boys keep themselves busy growing caladiums and selling the bulbs.
We got to see their warehouse full of bulbs and have them explain the growing and harvesting process.
They harvest the bulbs from December into March.... from hundreds of acres of land. The bulbs are washed and then sorted by size to be ready to sell in the spring. They usually don't send bulbs to Iowa until May, so I thought I would get a jump on growing them, so you will be able to buy them already leafed out. They are so wonderful in shady areas with hostas, begonias, impatiens. etc.

I think I will try some in a few of the planters at the Clarinda hospital this year.

Here at my place, I usually plant the bulbs in the ground and try to be patient until they come up. They like the ground to be 65 degrees before they feel like sprouting and growing.

Many varieties... in red, white and pink colors. I am bringing home nine different varieties.
