RAW vs. JPEG: Why It Matters for Low-Light Music Photography
Why do we shoot in RAW and not JPEG when capturing challenging low-light music performances?

The key difference is the data:

RAW: These files are like a digital negative—they contain all the original image information captured by your camera's sensor. This gives you maximum flexibility to recover details, adjust color, and reduce noise in post-processing.

JPEG: Your camera processes, compresses, and saves the image based on its internal settings, permanently discarding essential data. The resulting file is smaller but leaves you with very little room for correction or improvement.

For dynamic, high-contrast environments like the one at the Fortress X in Chatham (see the before and after below), you need all the data you can get!

The Pro Tip: If you want to master live music photography, always shoot in RAW.
