โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ’œ Travel Tips for Families Traveling With an Autistic Child or Loved One With a Disability

Traveling through an airport can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially for autistic children and individuals with intellectual, developmental, medical, or hidden disabilities. But there are resources and accommodations families can ask about to help make the experience more comfortable.

๐ŸŒป TSA CARES

TSA offers a FREE program called TSA Cares for passengers with disabilities, medical conditions, and other special circumstances.

TSA Cares can help families better understand the security screening process and may help coordinate additional assistance at the security checkpoint.

When possible, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before your flight to request assistance.

๐Ÿ’ป Learn more or request assistance here:
https://www.tsa.gov/travel/tsa-cares

๐Ÿ’œ ASK ABOUT PREBOARDING

If your child or loved one needs additional time or assistance getting settled on the airplane, contact your airline before traveling and ask what disability accommodations and preboarding options are available.

You can also speak with the gate agent before boarding begins and explain that your child has a disability and may need additional time or assistance boarding and getting settled.

๐Ÿ’บ ASK ABOUT SEATING ACCOMMODATIONS

If your child needs to sit beside a parent, caregiver, or support person because of their disability, let the airline know as early as possible.

Be specific about the accommodation needed rather than simply requesting a preferred seat.

๐ŸŒป LOOK FOR THE HIDDEN DISABILITIES SUNFLOWER

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a discreet way for someone to communicate that they have a non-visible disability and may need additional time, patience, understanding, or assistance.

Some participating airports provide Sunflower lanyards or other Sunflower items, so check with your departure airport before traveling.

๐ŸŽง PACK A SENSORY TRAVEL KIT

Consider bringing familiar items that can help your child regulate and feel comfortable throughout the trip, such as:

๐Ÿ’œ Noise-canceling headphones
๐Ÿ’œ Favorite snacks
๐Ÿ’œ A favorite blanket or comfort item
๐Ÿ’œ Tablet or preferred entertainment
๐Ÿ’œ Sensory/fidget items
๐Ÿ’œ Chargers
๐Ÿ’œ A change of clothing
๐Ÿ’œ Any essential medications or medical supplies

Keeping carry-on luggage manageable can also help caregivers keep their hands available to support their child.

๐Ÿ“ COMMUNICATE YOUR CHILD'S NEEDS

You may want to have a simple written explanation of your child's needs available, especially if they are nonverbal, communicate differently, become overwhelmed by touch or crowds, or need additional processing time.

TSA also has a Disability Notification Card that travelers may use to discreetly communicate a disability or medical condition to TSA officers.

๐Ÿšข AND DON'T FORGET ABOUT CRUISES!

If you're cruising, contact the cruise line's accessibility department before your trip and ask about accommodations for autistic travelers and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Some cruise lines offer services such as early boarding, boarding assistance, sensory-friendly activities, and other autism-friendly accommodations.

๐ŸŒธ THE BIGGEST TIP: ASK BEFORE YOU TRAVEL!

Every airline, airport, and cruise line may handle accommodations a little differently, so reach out ahead of time and tell them exactly what your loved one needs.

Traveling with a disability may require a little extra preparation, but families deserve opportunities to travel, make memories, and experience the world together. ๐Ÿ’œโœˆ๏ธ๐ŸŒŽ

Please share this with another autism, IDD, disability, or special-needs family who may be traveling soon!

๐Ÿ’œ Support Shouldnโ€™t Stop at Adulthood ๐Ÿ’œ

One of the most important reminders we can share is this: children with intellectual and developmental disabilities grow up to become adults. Their need for love, understanding, inclusion, resources, meaningful relationships, and community does not disappear when they reach a certain age.

So much attention is often placed on early intervention and childhood support : and those things are incredibly important. But adulthood matters too.

Adults with IDD still deserve opportunities to learn, grow, build friendships, participate in their communities, experience joy, develop independence in ways that are meaningful for them, and receive the support they need to thrive.

Their caregivers and families also continue to need encouragement, resources, respite, connection, and people who understand the journey. ๐Ÿ’œ

Needs donโ€™t disappear with age.

At Flowers Blooming Events Inc., we believe support should continue through every season of life. We want our children to grow up knowing there will still be a community ready to welcome them, celebrate them, advocate for them, and make room for them as adults.

Because inclusion should not have an age limit.
Compassion should not have an age limit.
Community should not have an age limit.
And support should not have an age limit. ๐ŸŒธ

Every stage of life matters.

Mama, this space is for you. ๐Ÿ’•

For the moms who spend so much of their time caring, advocating, encouraging, planning, supporting, and making sure everyone else is okay, you deserve a moment to check in, breathe, and be poured into too.

Join Flowers Blooming Events Inc. for our next Bloom & Breathe: Moms Edition, a loving and judgment-free space where moms can come together, share their hearts, encourage one another, pray together, exchange helpful resources, build meaningful connections, and simply be reminded that they are not alone on this journey.

There is something powerful about being surrounded by women who understand. Sometimes we don't need someone to fix everything: we just need a safe place to say, โ€œMe too,โ€ and know that someone truly gets it. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ’œ Self-Care Tip of the Day for Our Caregivers ๐Ÿ’œ

Caregiver, please remember that self-care does not have to be a big production to be meaningful.

Sometimes self-care looks like 15 quiet minutes before everyone else wakes up. Sometimes it is sitting in the car for a few extra minutes, enjoying a cup of coffee while it is still warm, taking a short walk, listening to your favorite song, praying, journaling, stretching, reading a few pages of a book, or simply sitting somewhere peaceful and doing absolutely nothing for a little while. ๐ŸŒฟ

You spend so much of your time making sure someone else is cared for, supported, safe, encouraged, and loved. It is okay to make room for yourself in that care too.

You do not have to wait until you have an entire free day, a vacation, or hours of uninterrupted time. Start with the minutes you have. Fifteen minutes. Thirty minutes. A small pocket of time where you can breathe, reset, and remind yourself that you matter too.

Rest is not something you have to earn by completely exhausting yourself first. ๐Ÿ’œ

So today, we encourage you to ask yourself:

โ€œWhat is one small thing I can do for myself today?โ€

Whatever your answer is, give yourself permission to do it without guilt.

You are seen.
You are valued.
You are appreciated.
And the care you give yourself matters too. ๐ŸŒธ

Because when caregivers bloom, families bloom.

๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒฟ Bloom & Breathe: Dad Edition ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’œ

Dads need a safe place to be poured into, too.

Flowers Blooming Events Inc. invites our caregiver dads to join us for a special Bloom & Breathe Dad Edition: a space created for fathers to connect, encourage one another, share openly, pray together, exchange resources, and simply breathe.

So often dads carry the responsibility of being strong for everyone around them, but strength also looks like having community. It looks like talking with other fathers who understand the joys, challenges, responsibilities, and emotions that can come with caring for a child or adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We want our dads to know: you are seen, you are valued, and you do not have to walk this journey alone. ๐Ÿ’œ

Strong dads. Strong families. Stronger together.
