Celebrating Women in the Industry

Victoria Colemen Winemaker
Napa’s First Black Woman Winemaker, Victoria Coleman, Begins 15th Vintage at Lobo

I began making cabernet sauvignon for Mario Bazan Cellars in 2005. In 2009, sauvignon blanc was added to the portfolio. Since then, I have taken winemaking projects for Lobo Wines, Tyge William Cellars in Sonoma, and most recently, Jade Valley Winery in China.

Country born: USA

Education: BS Viticulture and Enology University of California, Davis
2008 Internship Château Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, France

Years in the wine industry: 10-15 years

Winemaking Philosophy:
Do as much as possible in the vineyard to balance the grape clusters with the number of leaves to reach near perfect ripeness with lots of character. Do as little as possible with the fruit in the cellar to allow it to give the wine a sense of time and place.

. Mulled Wine Day- March 3
As you wind down, relax and take a break from the chill outside, enjoy a mug of mulled wine. For me mulled wine is my version of sangria, just a heated version. The term “mulled” simply means that the wine has been heated and spiced. Try this with your favorite cab or red blend or you're in the mood for the taste of wine without the alcohol or want to serve to a mixed crowd, try Chateau Diana Zero Alcohol Removed Cabernet Sauvignon.
(a dealcoholized wine that maintains the fantastic qualities of a premium wine without the alcohol. Flavors of black plum, dark cherry, firm tannins, and hints of cocoa, powder).
An Easy mulled Wine recipe
INGREDIENTS
2 large oranges
4 ¼ cups/1-liter red wine (Chateau Diana Zero Alcohol Removed Cabernet Sauvignon or your preference)
1 ¼ cups/10 ounces brandy (optional)
½ cup dark brown sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
3 cardamom pods, slightly crushed
PREPARATION
Using a peeler, remove the peel in strips from 1 orange then juice the orange. Slice the other orange into rounds and reserve for garnish.
In a nonreactive saucepan, combine orange peel, juice and the rest of the ingredients. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes. Increase the heat to high, bring mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to low. Simmer gently until flavors meld, about 30 minutes. Strain the mixture, discarding the solids.
Ladle into cups or mugs. Garnish each with a reserved orange round.
HAPPY SIPPING 😉

Americans, three less days to highlight and give homage to our African American legacies, accomplishments, talents (both brain and brawn) and ingenuity. Our recognition and noted presence hasn't expanded much since Carter G. Woodson took the first step in 1926 to acknowledge our presence and promote and educate people about our culture.

Stories behind Black History Month and why it's celebrated in February can be found here -
https://www.npr.org/2022/02/01/1075623826/why-is-february-black-history-month
https://www.history.com/topics/black-history/black-history-month.

To continue and expand Woodson’s vision, the Winedrawer, whose mission is to inform and educate, will continue to highlight African Americans who are wine makers, own wineries and are doing things in the fields of agriculture in the industry.

A few movers and shakers from the grape to the glass: Phil Long, Dwana Jones, Dusty Baker, David Brown, Theodora Lee and Victoria Coleman.

"The Longevity philosophy declares it is not just about the wines, but the experience. The food you had with it, the friends you shared the wine with and the location the experience took place. Everyone who visits the tasting room is treated like family, and always brings back friends for the experience" says winemaker Phil Long.
