We had about 90 minutes to kill before Anakeesta opened, so we Googled the nearest scenic drive and went for a drive through the Smokies.

We stopped at an overlook and SAW A BEAR.

My toddler is obsessed with bears. Of all the things we could have planned for him on this trip, that was an enormous moment.

And then we saw ANOTHER one later in the drive.

Of all the things we planned and paid for on this trip, one of Bennett's favorite moments happened because we had 90 minutes to kill before an attraction opened. 😂

Honestly, those are always the vacation moments that get me.

If part of your family skips a thrill ride, decide what they would enjoy doing while the others ride. A quiet sit, a look through a shop or time with the younger kids can all work. Agree on where to meet and how you will communicate. The non-rider gets to enjoy the day too.

Halloween Time at Disneyland includes seasonal experiences during regular park visits. Oogie Boogie Bash is a separate event, so missing that ticket does not mean missing the entire season. Look at the daytime offerings and park calendars when planning. Choose the extra party because you want that event—not because you think it is the only way to enjoy fall there.

Disney is offering Bluey and Bingo experiences on selected cruises. If they are the reason you want to book, verify the ship and sailing before making a promise to your kids. Then check the onboard schedule for the actual activities. A favorite character is a big deal when you are little.

A Savanna View room at Animal Kingdom Lodge is an upgrade I would weigh against how much time you plan to spend there. If you want slow mornings and room breaks, it may be a meaningful part of the trip. If you are out from opening to closing, decide whether the extra cost is worth it to you.

Would you go with the group or happily stay back?

When my friends went to Halloween Horror Nights, I stayed at the hotel with the kids. I am a scaredy cat, so part of me was relieved. I still hated missing out. Splitting up made sense for our family. Being glad you made a decision and wishing you could join in can happen at the same time.

What bothers your child most: darkness, loud sounds or drops?

A height requirement tells you one part of the story. Before a Disney ride, think about darkness, sudden sounds, drops and how your child handles unfamiliar scenes. Frozen Ever After, for example, has no height requirement but includes small drops and dark sections. Preview the attraction together if that helps, and let them change their mind.

I don’t want to turn every Disney day into another assignment.

Starting our homeschool year has me thinking about how much kids notice when we’re out doing things. I’d rather leave room for their questions. Read a sign together, find something on the map, talk about an animal. That can be enough.
