Define Your Success!

What a great surprise this morning. Thanks What's Happening Tulsa. Sometimes I get in my head and start to use metrics I never intended to use to define my success. You probably do too. Define your own success and enjoy! Here's the whole story:

My Dad used to have a saying, Money only solves Money problems. As a kid, I used to laugh at that and sometimes I laugh at it now. Saying stuff like a Taco and a check for 10k would solve a lot of my problems right now.... until it happens, some rich/famous person has a real problem that their money can’t get them out of, and I find myself repeating; money only solves money problems.

I may not have recognized what he meant years ago, but now as an entrepreneur, I recognize it to mean success is something you must define for yourself. Define it early and often. Ask yourself. What does success look like, feel like, what will people say about your product or service? If you say success is being rich or famous, you’ve missed the whole point of the exercise. Think about success on a professional level and what that success will allow you to do in your personal life.

Here’s an example. A little over 7 years ago when I moved back home and started social media Tulsa and our annual conference, I defined what success looked like. A small, uber social, connected community of people sharing their best practices and helping each other navigate the digital marketing space. I wanted SMTULSA conference to feel like you were in my living room and I just so happened to invite the smartest people I know. And that’s what I did year after year. But in 2016, I moved away from my definition of success and started measuring my conference using metrics that I had never intended to use. I thought there should be more people, i should be making more money, more recognition from the city of Tulsa and Media. After that year’s conference, I knew the speakers and our production team, had hit it out of the park, it was just as intended, but I was in a funk. Luckily, some of those smart people started telling me how amazing their experience was and how SMTULSA Conference isn’t like any other conference they’d ever been to, some saying it was the best because of the small connected community.

Some people shared that they enjoyed learning from someone else’s experience even though they had tons of their own. The comfortable environment and speakers who connected with them on a level they can’t get at the massive social media and marketing conferences.
Wow! I snapped out of it real quick and started planning 2017 with my success definition intact and I tell you the 2017 conference was amazing and this time I allowed myself to experience the success of the community and my project.

You can’t keep yourself from focusing on the wrong objectives and the ego is going to rear its ugly head a time or two, but by defining what success looks like, feels like, and sounds like, you’ll snapback and enjoy your success. You may even find yourself on a beach, enjoying friends and family listening to your favorite artists pour out their personal failings in a song and say to yourself, Money only solves money problems.
