One of the biggest mistakes freelance sports photographers make?
They stay too quiet.
When I was younger, I would show up to freelance assignments nervous because the athletes didn’t know me—and I didn’t know them. I thought the safest thing to do was stay back, avoid interrupting, and just take the photos.
But I eventually realized I was missing something important: connection.
You don’t have to become best friends with every athlete. But saying hello, encouraging them, and acknowledging the moment can help them feel more comfortable around your camera.
“Let’s go!”
“Big second half!”
“You’ve got this!”
Those small interactions can build trust—and trust can lead to better, more natural sports photographs.
You may be working as a freelancer, but you’re still photographing people. Don’t be afraid to connect with your subjects.
