Over the past few years (since my dad and grandmas have passed) and especially after working at Positive Connections these past two months, I’ve come to realize how much we avoid talking about the hardest parts of life—like death—and how that makes it even harder to cope when we lose someone we love. Just like there’s a stigma around discussing HIV/STI’s..there’s also a stigma around discussing death. But if we opened up and talked about it more, we might find it a little less frightening and a lot more manageable. Knowing each other’s wishes and having those conversations can bring a sense of peace and preparedness, making it easier to honor our loved ones when the time comes. I know the conversation is had between partners about moving on etc but what about with your kids, siblings, friends, family..have you discussed their wishes if they pass before you or your wishes if you pass before them? Very rarely do we ask the questions we truly need and want to know while on earth. Maybe consider breaking the silence and normalize having these important conversations with the people we love, so we can support each other through every part of life.
