DON’T JUST SMOKE THE CIGAR. TASTE IT.
A good cigar isn't just about smoke. There are layers of flavor hiding in it — and the drink in your hand can completely change what you notice.
Next time you light up, slow down and try this:
1. Take your time.
Don't rush the cigar. Let it burn naturally and take slow, comfortable puffs. Too many puffs too quickly can heat the cigar and change the flavor.
2. Smell before you taste.
Before you take a puff, smell the foot of the cigar. After you light it, pay attention to the aroma coming off the wrapper. Your sense of smell is a huge part of how you experience flavor.
3. Pay attention to the first few puffs.
What do you notice?
Cedar? Pepper? Coffee? Cocoa? Nuts? Earth? Cream? Sweetness?
Don't worry about being "right." Taste is personal.
4. Now take a sip of your drink.
This is where it gets interesting.
A little sweetness can make certain to***co notes seem richer.
Coffee can bring out roasted or chocolate notes.
A beer's bitterness can change how you perceive spice.
Wine's acidity can brighten certain flavors.
Whiskey can bring out oak, vanilla, caramel and spice.
Then...
5. Go back to the cigar.
Did something change?
Sometimes the drink brings a flavor forward that you didn't notice before.
But here's the fun part...
THE CIGAR CAN CHANGE THE DRINK TOO.
Take a puff. Let the flavors settle.
Then take another sip.
Does the whiskey taste sweeter?
Did the coffee become more chocolatey?
Did the beer seem less bitter?
Did the wine become fruitier?
That's the beauty of pairing.
You're not just smoking a cigar.
You're creating an experience between to***co, drink, aroma and your palate.
And there's no single "correct" pairing.
The best pairing is the one that makes you stop and say...
"Damn. That's good."
