So the scenery isn't great yet here in Wisconsin but it sure felt good to get outside with my camera. With things still dry, I decided to enjoy the clouds and contrasting colors instead. If nothing else, getting us all out for some fresh and exercise is certainly a great benefit too.

It is cold in Wisconsin right now. Well, relatively cold consider it is supposed to get down to 3 degrees sometime this week. This basically means that I am so not motivated to go shoot outdoor photography so I have been making jewelry like crazy and playing around with some photos I hadn't look at in a while. What do you think of this black and white filter?

I have been busy with some major changes in my life lately and am just now getting back around to post my vacation photos (in color). I have to say after not looking at them for a while, it is really fun to go back and remember the beauty and peacefulness out at Yellowstone and Grand Teton. I think I need to pull them out every few weeks just to relax and go back again even if it is just through photos.

And just to remind everyone, these animal shots are done through a long lens. I don't approach them closely and don't attempt to touch, feed, or disturb them in any way. Wild animals need to stay wild and be respected for their nature. Please be conscious of them when you visit these places.

I absolutely love Wyoming and on vacation we made sure to hit Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. With so many photos, there is no way to show everything so I will start with Yellowstone.

What struck me most about this particular trip to Yellowstone was a feeling like I was on a different world or planet. The textures here are rich and varied. And the colors are wonderful but take a look at a few photos that I think showcase those crazy, wonderful textures using black and white. I tried to get a little bit of Yellowstone you don't normally see in the guidebooks. Let me know what you think and perhaps I will showcase a few of the colors next.

So the Black Hills National Forest is a stunning area with a very curvy road to Mt. Rushmore. While the adults loved it, the kids did not. Especially when the storm came in and pelted us with hail. But we detoured into Wind Cave National Park, the Museum of Geology at the University, and Bridal Veil Falls. In the end, I got some dramatic photos (mostly through the car window) and we loved seeing all the mule deer come out in the evening as we end our day at Devil's Tower.

For the first time since having kids, we actually did a family vacation. Not just going somewhere to visit family, but actually hitting a destination just to see and do things. But since my kids, or at least Reilly, doesn't do photos i turned my hand to some landscape and wildlife photography. And had some close encounters that I wasn't expecting (RIP little robin that flew in front of the car).

Driving out to Yellowstone and Grand Teton, we detoured through South Dakota to hit Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Windcave, and really anything else we could fit in. On the way back we took a different route and were amazed at the beauty everywhere we looked. Thank you Teddy Roosevelt for your foresight to protect these lands. They should be preserved and cherished. I have so many photos, but in the next few posts I will show off my favorites and some stories behind them.

Let's start here...Badlands National Park where bursts of color were unexpected.

My brother didn't know it but this Christmas he gave me a great present. He recently purchased his own Canon camera which is learning how to use. So when we went to visit, he volunteered his beautiful friend Katie to model so that I could teach him some basics of portrait photography. I have to admit, I was nervous because I haven't done portraits in a long time. But it seems it is a lot like riding a bike, those skills don't take long to come back. Even though it took some searching to figure out the camera settings, I was pretty happy with my results. I can only hope I a decent teacher.

While Arches National Park is amazing, my heart (and breath) was taken away by Canyonlands. Being so close I thought they would be similar in terrain but as you can see, Canyonlands is a world of its own. Cut through by the Colorado and Green rivers, this is the start of what will become the Grand Canyon but don't be fooled. This area is vast and stunning in its own right. Although Utah is known for its 'Delicate Arch' to me this is the jewel of Utah. I would put it on the top of my bucket list if you have never been. While most of the overlooks are easily accessible from the paved road, don't skip some of the easier trails. It is worth the feeling of being at the edge of the world although I know my husband was pretty nervous as I got my photos. Take the time and enjoy this not so well known treasure.

Getting into Arches National Park is impressive in itself so by the time we drove in, I was already in awe. We almost immediately stopped at the first pull out so that I could take photos and we marveled at how rock can take on so many different forms. From day one you will see some familiar formations like Delicate Arch which, I can tell you, was a heck of a climb. But the climb back down at dusk showed the 'golden hour' photographers love and watching the sky burn was amazing. Hope you enjoy my first batch of photos and look for the tiny people and vehicles that give a perspective on how big these rocks are!

So last fall I went to a local swimming hole in Baraboo, WI called Pewits Nest. I decided then to get back there once all the greenery had come in and this past weekend I did so. I love the contrast to the fall colors I saw last year and I would really enjoy doing some fairy photos at this location. It has such an enchanted peaceful feel to it and my daughter and I relaxed there for quite some time. Plus, I really enjoyed some camera time to keep my skills up for my vacation in September!

For those who wonder what Wisconsin has to offer other than cheese and the Packers, here is a little taste of some of the local scenery. Pewitt's Nest and Rocks of Gibraltar just north of us and just a couple of the parks where you can spend a warm fall day hiking and see the wonders of nature.

I had the chance to do a photography session at the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue last weekend. Although these animals are behind strong fences, they are some of the most beautiful and intimidating animals to see. How sad that these animals cannot be in the wild as they were born to be but how lucky to be able to experience such beauty, strength and majesty up close.

Although I don't have room for a studio anymore, I can take advantage of outdoor lighting in my yard. I always love taking photos of my kids that look more natural with genuine smiles but it gets harder every year.

I went to a lecture today by MeRa Koh, an amazing photographer who really knows how to captures some of the most beautiful moments in life. She helped me remember why I love photography and with some many loved ones gone, it is a way to see them again and remember. And as I look at them, the importance of recording those moments inspires me to keep picking up my camera.

It has taken me a while to look back at the photos of my cousin's wedding as that was the last trip I took with my mom but I take comfort in the love that is so obvious between these two as they start their life as husband and wife. This is what love truly looks like and it really is such a joy to see.

I am not a great landscape photographer. I love to capture moments of and for people so I have practiced my craft with portraits and weddings. That being said, I don't know of any photographer that could resist such a gorgeous sunset in such a gorgeous setting. This is Tenney Park in Madison, WI and it is one of my favorite parks to picnic, play, and relax. Makes you want to come visit doesn't it?

It has been a while since I posted something, had a few computer issues but just couldn't wait to share a little something from this weekend's wedding. Such a gorgeous couple, some vintage lace and a beautiful day. Tommi and Elisha, this is for you!

Heading to Indy today for a seminar with my favorite portrait photographer, Sandy Puc' and my favorite wedding photographer, Jerry Ghionis. If you have never seen their work, I would definitely recommend checking them out. These two are among the best photographers in the world and you will get an idea of why photography is the art of painting with light
