“Selamat Datang” or welcome to my SeraiMas, Malaysian Food Catering page. I am Alice Koh, a Straits Born Chinese or Peranakan Nyonya from Malacca (Melaka), Malaysia. “Peranakan” refers to a person of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage. With this heritage and cultural background, food is essentially a way of life. I am excited to introduce Malaysian cuisines to Spokane by cooking and catering at Feast World Kitchen.

Hello everyone! Shane and I have watched and supported Suwanee of Simply Suwanee over the years in her mission to feed the leprosy village in Thailand where she came from. Her dedication to help the villagers especially the elderly, whom had watched her grew up is a part of her that we admired and respected. You can read her stories of her humble beginnings and works that she has done in her website posts. What she doesn't say often is how her presence in the village as she returned to help has inspired young women to continue their education to college and university levels. She has encourage women to empower themselves. ❤️ Shane and I are flying back to Malaysia with our own missions next week. We will fly to Thailand soon after to support her mission to feed the village. We will contribute a small fund and we are hoping our supporters will help by donating at the GoFundMe Suwanee has set up for this cause. Thank you for reading. Together we can make the world a better place.

Anyone planning for a trip to Bali? We need your help!

Shane and I are flying back to Malaysia in 2 weeks. We will be heading to Bali by the end of December to meet the families and children. We are hoping to kick start the school's library project and we NEED YOUR HELP.

----

Could you bring a few English books (new or used) for the village when you travel to Bali and plan to visit this beautiful, ancient village of Tenganan?

What we are looking for:
---------------------------------------
▪️Easy to read English story books from basic to intermediate. The children range from 7 to 12 and only learn basic English.
▪️World atlas, picture dictionary, etc.
▪️anything that would encourage and improve reading skill.

These books can be dropped off at the village's information booth. A box will be provided for collection. Thank you for your attention.

I had a great opportunity to be Suwanee's assistant for her KSPS PBS Thai cooking class at 2nd Harvest yesterday. The Chicken Pumpkin Curry and Chicken Satay were out of this world delicious! I made a Watermelon with Vegetables carving display for this event. It took me 5 hours to get the watermelon done. The flowers and leaves were carved out from sweet peppers and cucumbers.

I forgot my phone yesterday so last portion of the video was taken by Suwanee.

Humanity in Community ❤️ Thank you Mirak of Skewers Armenian Restaurant.

This November, as SNAP benefits come to an end, many families in our community will be facing greater food insecurity. At Skewers, we want to do our small part to help.

Starting this Saturday, we have a number of prepacked, microwaveable chicken and rice meals available daily — free to anyone who needs one. No questions asked. You’re welcome to pick up meals for your own family, or to take a few and drop them off to someone you know who could use a little help. Just come in an ask for a community meal. Feel free to call ahead to ensure thetr are still some available before you stop by.

This isn’t about publicity — it’s about people. It isnt about attention it’s about intention.

We’re sharing this to make sure our community knows there’s help available, and to remind each of us that kindness still matters. Even small acts of care can bring hope to someone’s day. In a time when division feels louder than unity, let’s choose compassion. Let’s be the kind of community that stands strong — together.

Ways you can play a part: be aware of resources in your community. Be aware of and support food banks in your community as they will be pillars during this season. Show extra kindness to your neighbors and even strangers. Let love overcome fear.

Spokane Foodies! Here's a YouTube video of Amy (from Australia) being introduced to Penang Nyonya food by Shane Chin and his family. The Asam Laksa and Jicama Stir Fry with Dried Squids are uniquely Penang Nyonya dishes. The difference between Penang Baba Nyonya and Melaka Baba Nyonya is the language spoken. In Penang, they speak Hokkien (a Chinese dialect) while in Melaka, we speak a creole Malay.

George Town in Penang and Melaka (Malacca) are designated as a single UNESCO World Heritage Site, titled "Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca". They were jointly inscribed in 2008 due to their shared multi-cultural trading heritage resulting from 500 years of East-West interchange.

Today I'm eating with and his wonderful family and learning all about Nyonya/Perenakan cuisine! It's the fascinating blend of Chinese and Malaysia...

Shane and I recently presented "A Taste of Bali" hosted at the Spokane Public Library at Shadle Park. We had videos, photos, and stories of our travels and humanitarian work in Bali. We also served Indonesian inspired food samplers to our audience and were very appreciative of the donations to our Bali Kids Project.

You can help us to by contributing.

Malaysia has officially recognised the Baba-Nyonya or Peranakan Chinese community as a distinct sub-ethnic group, allowing members to have “Baba Nyonya” listed as their race on official documents — a milestone that restores a long-overlooked part of the nation’s heritage.

The new classification, announced by the Home Ministry, begins with a pilot programme in Melaka before expanding nationwide in January 2026. Members of the community can apply through the National Registration Department (NRD) to amend their birth certificates and identity cards.

For many, this is more than an administrative update — it is the restoration of identity. The recognition gives the Baba-Nyonya community visibility and pride after years of being subsumed under a broader ethnic label.
