I often see posts complaining about how Southbridge doesn’t have the businesses, restaurants, entertainment, and opportunities that people want or once had.
We blame the town. We blame the economy. We blame this person, that person, and everything in between.
But when are we going to start looking at ourselves?
Stay with me.
Everyone is sad when a local business closes. But how often did you actually make an effort to support that business while it was open?
I see more posts bashing local businesses than celebrating them. If your first instinct is to publicly drag a local business every time you have an experience you didn’t like — unless it’s a legitimate safety or health concern — maybe take a step back.
If someone is hyping up a local business and your first response is to explain why you don’t like it… maybe that’s part of the problem.
If your first instinct is to order online or drive to Worcester, Sturbridge, Auburn, even Connecticut before even checking out what’s available right here in Southbridge… maybe that’s part of the problem.
If you have one bad experience and decide you’ll never return instead of talking to the owner or giving them an opportunity to make it right… maybe that’s part of the problem.
And let’s be honest — most of us have had a bad experience at a big-name chain and still went back.
I would never tell anyone where they should spend their money. But when we start making a list of everyone we think is responsible for why Southbridge doesn’t have the businesses we want, we should probably put one more name on that list:
US.
Because our spending habits, our word-of-mouth, our reviews, our comments, and the way we talk about local businesses all matter.
You may think what YOU do or don’t do won’t make a difference.
But it does.
There are business owners, entrepreneurs, investors, and people considering opening businesses right here who are watching how our community supports — or tears down — the businesses already here.
If we want more options, more restaurants, more entertainment, more entrepreneurs, and more investment in Southbridge…
We have to become the community that supports the businesses we want to attract.
So let’s actually do something about it.

Not one you used to love.
Not one you heard about.
Not one you think should be better.
One you personally support.
Then do more than comment: go there, spend your money there, leave them a positive review, tell a friend, share their post, and recommend them when someone asks where to go.
Let’s make this comment section a love letter to Southbridge businesses instead of another place to complain about what we don’t have.
Because if we want Southbridge to change, we have to show businesses that Southbridge is worth investing in.
What we support is what we keep. What we build together is what we get to keep.
Let’s show them what Southbridge can do.
And yes… I know y’all love to read a bad review.
Let’s see if we can make the good ones louder.
