Picking a cruise cabin, the honest version:

Inside: the best sleep on the ship. No window, so you will have no idea if it is 3am or noon.

Ocean view: a real window and a real ocean, once the ship leaves port. Before that it is a lovely view of the parking lot.

Balcony: your own little porch for morning coffee. Same parking lot rule applies.

What happens after you book a trip with us?

First, you check your details, sign the terms and pay your deposit. Then you add your passport or ID (your name has to match it, letter for letter). Your final payment due date is on your invoice, and your trip page always shows your next payment. Before you leave, we go over your trip together, and all your confirmations are in one place.

Then you just go. We're here if you need us.

If you have ever wanted to see where it actually comes from, the Ch*****ne region is closer than most people think. Reims is less than an hour from Paris on the fast train.

A few things we'd plan around:

Book your cellar tours ahead. Many of the big houses don't take walk-ins.
Go underground. The old chalk cellars beneath Reims and Épernay are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Save an afternoon to stroll the Avenue de Ch*****ne in Épernay.
September, during the harvest, is the liveliest time to go.

Would you do it as a day trip from Paris, or stay a few nights in w**e country?

The biggest difference between a river cruise and an ocean cruise is not the water. It is the size of the ship.

Most river ships carry about 150 to 190 guests. A big ocean ship can carry thousands. Almost everything else follows from that.

Here is how it plays out:

Ports: On a river, you are in a new town most days. On the ocean, some sailings spend a few days at sea between ports.

On board: River ships keep it simple, with a library, a fitness room and talks about the places you are visiting. Big ocean ships bring pools, shows and a long list of places to eat.

Meals: River ships tend to have set mealtimes, so you get to know the people at your table. Ocean ships let you eat where and when you like.

Price: A river cruise usually costs more per person, but more is bundled in, often including shore excursions. An ocean fare starts lower, and drinks, excursions and upgrades often cost extra.

So before you put two prices side by side, add up the extras you would actually buy.

If you are traveling with young kids, the ocean is usually the easier fit. If you want a new town most days and a quiet ship at night, look hard at the river.
