Way to go ! Barcelo has found away to keep birds away from outdoor dining restaurants, while protecting the environment (no poisons, traps etc.)
Daily female and male Harris Hawks and their trainers patrol the beaches between the 6 resorts of the Maya Grand complex. The hawks are released and soar around each hotel and return when called by the trainers. Their mere presence frightens smaller song birds away for several hours...and since the hawks are fed at home by their trainers...the other birds aren't hawk snacks, either.
The male hawk trainer explained to me, the hawks begin their training as chicks, before they can fly. This pair is just over 3 years old.

Pam Phillips, with my own Christmas travel story. Grab a cup of cocoa and hear how instead of a Mexican beach sipping margaritas, I dined on take out Chinese food during a blizzard...and learned a Christmas Cheer message,too.
The blizzard that had enveloped most of the country had not spared Metro Detroit. However on late December 24 weather seemed to be improving. At 10pm our flight to Los Cabos for 12/25 was on time; my husband & I headed to the Detroit Metro Airport Westin for a good night's sleep for our 8:35am departure.
Wake up call at 4:30am & flight cancelation at the same time. Knowing time was of the essence,(this was not my first travel interuptuon😉); I called Delta Vacations, jumped into last night's clothes, while I simultaneously sprinted to the ticket counter. Luckily for me, that early, there were no lines. Unluckily, no flights could get us to Mexico until 12/31, a day before we were supposed to return. I grumpily said, "Thank you, Merry Christmas" and reached into the goody bag, packed for our flight crew(who as we all know, have had several years of challenges) handing the representative who told me my dreams of a December tan were over, a Starbuck's gift card. Immediately his face lit up and he smiled and said "Thank you, Merry Christmas". The same grin from the Westin desk clerk when I handed her fuzzy socks at check out, a "bless you" from the valet who braved the cold to get our car, as I handed his tip & Starbucks card.
Quickly,we realized "It's Christmas Day, we have no food!" Remembering the Chinese dinner in 'A Christmas Story'; we picked up a feast. Dining with our neighbor whose plans had also canceled, I realized I hadn't thought of my trip in hours. Tomorrow would be time for a travel insurance claim & rescheduled vacation. Today, a reminder, travel like most things in life is unpredictable. Packing grace, patience & flexibility is as important as sunscreen and toothpaste. Interrupted trips are stressful not only for travelers, but for providers as well. Kindness& courtesy need to be the expectation, not the exception, to all during these times. Buon Natale from Florence's Santa Maria Novella pharmacy, the world's oldest. (Franciscan monks first offered their healing elixirs in 1221). This location was given to the monastery in 1612 by a grateful noble family, whose son was cured by the monks. Today, instead of medicine you will find perfums, bath products, soaps, potpourris etc., all locally made with locally sourced ingredients.
My last stop on my Tuscany adventure, Santa Maria Novella is worth a visit anytime of the year. But, at Christmas it's literally a wonderland of red pomegranate and green and red holly. (I MAY have brought back a few Christmas gifts for family and myself).

Pam Phillips reporting from Florence! Today I had breakfast with Michaelangelo and Machiavelli, or rather I visited their tombs located in my favorite Fierenze church, Santa Croce.
Santa Croce despite it's 19th century facade is a Gothic church, pre dating Florence's famous Duomo. Since the Middle Ages famous Italians have been entombed here. Galileo, Rossi and even Marconi can be found in Santa Croce.
Even if history isn't your thing, the crypts were made by master sculptures and the walls are covered with both Gothic frescoes and Renaissance paintings.
But it's the stained glass that keeps me coming back only in the morning, though. The sunlight streaming through the panels dances down bringing all the colors onto the floor. Breathtaking.

The last 36 hours have been a literal blur of airports and highways...that have led to a perfect lunch of smooth chianti paired with straight from the wood fired oven, pizza Margherita.
Today, we'll celebrate Thanksgiving, Tuscany style in the Chianti region. A day of history, wine, lunch with wine, a stroll through the charming city of Greve en Chianti where we will have...more wine.

💙💛Yesterday, ASTA(American Society of Travel Advisors) made a substantial donation to the Global Empowerment Movement’s Bstrong campaign to help relocate Ukrainian refugees. They established a welcome center in Medyka, Poland on the Ukraine border.
💙💛This welcome center will serve as a complimentary travel relocation center. The funds collected will be used for booking and paying for flights and trains so that evacuees can immediately get to a place where they have established support with family or friends.
💙💛There’s nowhere for people to stay, so this is the best solution to spread out the Ukrainian population throughout Europe and not have them homeless. With your help and donations, we will be able to scale their operations and relocate thousands of women and children.
💙💛What’s more, is that the Global Empowerment movement’s Bstrong campaign is using an IATA accredited travel agency for this relocation service.
