So we have three different dahlia "patches" here. The big one that is used for just cut flowers is in the front with mostly open land around it. The one we use for dahlia tuber sales is a few hundred yards towards the back of the farm with mostly trees around it. And between the two we have quite a few "pot tubers" still busy growing outside the greenhouse. The big patch was frosted several weeks ago. It has been below freezing several times where the pot tubers are growing, but we turn on the sprinklers to protect them overnight. And the ones in the back have not been hit at all. In any event, we keep a close eye on the temperature because we aren't fully winterized outside and a thousand growing pot tubers are an investment we don't want harmed. The weather report yesterday said lows in the 40s. And last night at midnight I get alarms from our temperature monitors. It was nearing 32 degrees in the pot tubers, and the temperature in the front field was near 25! Out I go in my robe and slippers, turning on sprinklers and dragging tarps over un-winterized water systems, racing up and down the fields. And I ran out of tarps, so I grabbed up some very big pots and even the picnic table umbrella to cover the un-winterized irrigation systems. It was cold. But the moon was bright and otherwise a beautiful night. I thought I was too old for such, but I've still got it 🙂.
