Summer Theater Workshop Announces All-Star Staff
Tonys, Grammys, Emmys and Pulitzer Prizes - what do these have to do with the North Shore Summer Theater Workshop? They’re just some of the awards associated with shows the workshop staff have contributed to in their extensive work on Broadway, off Broadway, in regional theater, television and film. Artistic Director Terry Berliner has assembled an all-star lineup of acclaimed theater professionals and theater educators to staff the program that debuts this summer at North Shore High School.
The program offers an invaluable and unique opportunity for current students and alumni interested in working on-stage and/or off-stage in various aspects of the performing arts to learn from and establish mentor relationships with top theater professionals. North Shore students in grades 6-12 enjoy local preference for program registration if they apply before May 15 when the workshop is opened to enrollment from students outside the district.
Led by Ms. Berliner, the program staff includes Music Director Seth Farber, Set Designer Antje Ellermann, Lighting Desinger Kirk Fitzgerald, Sound Designer Scott Stauffer, Production Manager Cate DiGirolamo, Associate Production Manager Jason Domingo, Choreographer TJ Newton, Choreographer and Associate Director Francesca Carillo-Vaccino, and more. Read about them on the program website www.summertheaterworkshop.org
Produced and sponsored by the non-profit North Shore Arts Angels and open to students in grades 6 to 12, the workshop will present "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” an award-winning musical comedy conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin and additional material by Jay Reiss. This delightful show centers on a fictional spelling bee run by quirky adults and in which quirky adolescents compete. The workshop will also present cabaret-style performances of songs by some of the best writers and composers working in musical theater today including Lynnette Barkley, Bobby Cronin, Tony DeSare, Michelle Elliott, Kirsten Guenther, Adam Gwon, Joe Iconis, Julia Jordan, Andrew Lippa, Pete Mills, Glenn Slater, Joy Son, Wendy Leigh Wilf and more.
Workshop rehearsals take place Mondays through Thursdays, 2 pm to 6 pm, from June 29 to August 6 in the air-conditioned performing arts facilities of North Shore High School, with evening hours added during technical rehearsals. Performances are the last weekend in July and the first weekend in August. Students will have numerous responsiblities in both productions and may work exclusively off-stage, if they prefer. North Shore Alumni are welcome to audition for performance roles in the cabaret or to pitch in behind the scenes. Tuition for the six-week program is $1,700 plus a $100 refundable deposit and includes all instructional materials, two tickets to each performances, meals during technical rehearsals and more.
Students should apply today for one of the limited spots at www.summertheaterworkshop.org. The Summer Theater Workshop is a revival of a program that ran at North Shore for 42 years before public funding was cut after a budget defeat a decade ago. The program uses space provided under a license agreement with the North Shore Central School District but is operated solely by North Shore Arts Angels. The school district is not responsible for any aspect of the program. The non-profit program relies on tuitions, donations and the assistance of volunteers.
