Tiny woodland wedding in the middle of the big city. Omar and Emily exchanged their vows inside San Francisco’s beautiful botanical garden, where Omar volunteers as a walking tour docent. During their ceremony, the couple invited each of their guests to participate in a unity jar celebration, where natural elements representing different parts of their lives were intermixed to symbolize this new, complete beginning together. Loved being a part of this gathering and how special it was to see these two wed in a space we all love and care for so deeply. Special thanks to the vendors I’m so grateful to call friends as well – hair and makeup by @urbanbeautyloft.fiona, videography by @dreambookjosh.

I’m grateful to have recently photographed one of the first ever weddings at the new @chase_center in San Francisco, and boy was it a treat for the heart and senses. The couple’s understated, yet effortlessly elegant style came through in every element of the day. The bride’s sister designed all the ikebana-inspired centerpieces and ceremony florals. Friends and family helped officiate and share passages at the wedding as the sun set over the Sky Bar and the bay. Dining together is a huge staple in this couple’s relationship – as evidenced by the restaurant-themed table assignments – and @tasteofchasecenter truly went above and beyond in creating the most beautiful dinner course, complete with custom desserts crafted to resemble ripe apples and lemons, plus surprise cakes for all the guests celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. I’m having the worst time trying to tag additional vendors (for some reason IG automatically takes down my posts when I do), but know that behind every one of these events is an absolutely insane vendor team. Couldn’t do it without them – planning and design by Wilder Events Co, hair and makeup by Sacha Badame, bouquet design by Revel, rentals by Bright Event Rentals, music and entertainment by Jackie Sugarlumps, special shout-out to my own team members Nahla and Anna for carrying me through 💫

happy (almost) lunar new year! 🧧 it was a huge x1000000 honor to recently shoot for @eastmeetsdress, who I’ve been following and admiring for years. we shot this latest studio collection with the dream team @eastmeetsdress @designherimagemakeup @isabelle.du @dennishour including special cameos by @oliveandcaper. special thanks to @dannygreenmedia for being my strongman on this 💪🏻 i’m really looking forward to all that this Tiger year brings, especially in light of how difficult the past two years have been. my mother is the most courageous, ferocious Tiger sign I personally know, and if I manage to live even a small portion of this year in her example, it’ll have been a good year spent. 笑口常开, 心想事成, may your year be filled with smiles and laughter, and may all your wishes come true!

Hiya friends. Another year, another hundred thousand (conservative estimate) photos to reflect on. Somehow, this past year has felt like a decade compressed into the span of 365 days. I simultaneously pushed my body further and became one with my sofa more, all in the same time frame – strange. While the pre-pandemic color has finally faded from my hair, there is definitely a new line on my forehead that didn’t exist before. And more so than any other previous year, I learned to photograph a wider, wilder array of people and their loves. I revisited subjects twice, three times, sometimes more as families expanded and celebrations continued.

This carousel compilation is a tiny glimpse of the 88+ sessions I photographed in 2021, a feat I will never in good conscience attempt to tackle again. There were a lot of unhealthy habits created in the tornado of trying to keep things afloat last year, and I’ll be the first to admit that I let personal pride get in the way of caring for both my art and health. But what is self-employment if not constantly learning firsthand from your own experiences? For the first time perhaps ever, I feel safe in the knowledge that I am more than the number of blocked dates on my calendar, that things I’m passionate about don’t go away if I take a few steps back (conversely, as my indoor plants teach me, they tend to thrive), that I can be quieter (or entirely silent) online and still exist fully and wholly.

After all that, the irony of writing yet another small essay here is not lost on me. My biggest 2021 takeaways are to remember the “why” of whatever it is I do and to invest in insoles for all my shoes (I’ve received the bill in my 30s for all the hazards endured in my 20s). Good friends continue to tell me, “you are right where you need to be.” Making a continued effort this year to not let this advice go in one ear and out the other. As always but especially now, I greatly appreciate the opportunity given to me to continue expressing my voice in ways beyond words. I look forward to this season’s new stories and loves.

I just got my film back from @goodmanfilmlab and I was so excited, I had to share some of these right away! Here are two flatlay images that my team and I put together for Rachel and Austin’s wedding at @resortatsquawcreek last month. After my couples spend so much time planning such beautiful celebrations, I feel as though the least I can do is create my own spin with documenting their details in a unique and memorable way. But I have to admit, it’s not easy. The pressure is enormous. I want these photos to feel alive, and joyful, like the feeling of being welcomed into a party. Which can be tricky, because if there isn’t heart in what we are doing, then it quickly just becomes… stuff. And that goes back to the basis of all great design, that it must be empathetic, it must be creative, and it must serve a need. So here I am, on hands and knees, prodding paper around at the beginning of the wedding day, a time you’d think would be the calmest part of the whole photographing experience, but more often than not, is the exact opposite of that 😅 but this is also the culmination of so much love and consideration, a time to truly be celebrated.

I’m so happy with these images because @audereevents was there right next to me, evaluating color and composition in the best possible way to highlight @twinkleandtoast’s stunning designs. @inezjphoto @sag_photos were on my other side, helping me unfurl every bloom, generously given by @stemsbydiana, prepping my gear, and keeping a constant eye on the clock. We weighed every detail for how it tied back to this celebration (my favorite parts are Rachel’s heirloom jewelry and the stamp ode to the Winter Olympics). This work is truly a labor of love and I cannot emphasize enough the difference it makes to have a professional, vetted team with you on one of the biggest days of your life.

Big guest count, no guest count, it doesn’t matter: it’s invaluable to have vendors like these, pooling their knowledge and supporting you from every angle so that you can enjoy your day to the absolute fullest. So I guess I’ll wind up today’s soapbox post and just say: hire a planner!!! And if you need recommendations, I have many to share ☺️

Spent my milestone birthday this year photographing N + D’s summertime celebration with some of my all-time favorite vendors at @theestateyountville. I have so much love and respect for both the couples who’ve had their weddings postponed time and time again, as well as all the planning teams that have continued to serve with both grace and compassion through everything that comes our way. There are multi-layered elements to every story, but this feels especially true with all the weddings occurring this year and next. There is so much heart in all that we do, and I’m thankful to be in the thick of it all with this crew. Special thanks to the all-star ensemble @daldevents @daldevents_camille @amandavidmardesign @teresa_song @theestateyountville @elanartists @groverfilms @encoreeventsrentals @giggleandriot @indiefilmlab. Another shoutout to my own teammates @reginakpopova @mpgsoup for going above and beyond in service to others ✨ these images are triple the magic because of you all!

There’s this episode of Community that I think about a lot that has to do with the idea of multiple life possibilities, ranging from the very bad (“this is definitely the darkest timeline”) to the very good. A total must-see!! But let me sum some of it up here for you. There are key points in all of our lives where, afterwards, it feels like we can attribute huge changes and shifts in our stories back to. Maybe it’s the moment we took a risk with a job. Or met a funny someone at a meal plan in college. These are very me-specific scenarios 😅 but I can trace that red thread of fate from that summer afternoon with Michael all the way to our wedding day. We’ve all made incredibly pivotal decisions that brought us to where we are. But it’s hard to know in the moment what impacts these choices have. I had no idea that the day I sat next to @the.real.fletchers at a photography workshop would become one of the single most influential moments in my life. I almost didn’t go. I was having a bad morning and I remember thinking I had put on too much makeup, I was feeling really insecure. But Kayla’s natural kindness was the beginning of it all. I always tell everyone that my biggest workshop takeaways are never bits of technical knowledge, but the emotional impact instead. Kayla blew my heart wide open to the possibilities of seeking community in a way nobody had before. I remember the exact way I wrote down @schmohee’s email address, in the margins of my workshop notes, all because Kayla suggested that we connect. Flash forward to never knowing – never wanting to know – a life without these women ever again. As I approach the end of my 2021 season, I admit, it takes extra effort to get out of bed before my remaining sessions. But I remember: all it takes is one step, one connection, and then a million possibilities fracture out from that point. Every couple I photograph reshapes the way I shoot the next. And the next. And so on. Each new wedding takes me further along a journey that is as full and wide with possibilities as the day before. I guess I have only one lifetime of experiences to speak from but – looking back, I do think this is the best and brightest timeline.

There have been many past versions of me. I thought I’d be in a more unchanging sort of place by now, but for better or worse, I’m still learning to tune myself. It definitely doesn’t match the portrait of where I thought I’d be in my 30s, but then again I framed that portrait a decade ago with no context for my current life. Funny how we all do that. Here’s another funny story I want to share here. Michael and I recently met with a financial advisor and came away from the meeting with two very different takeaways. I looked at the charts and endless scrolling numbers and thought, “There is so much unknown. I don’t know if I can do this.” Michael turned to me and said, “Isn’t it amazing what a small fraction of life we’ve lived so far? And isn’t it also amazing that we get to live through so much more of that, together.” This reminder to reframe many of my initial gut reaction thoughts is a daily exercise I’m tackling with the help of therapy and friends. These last two years of living in varying degrees of isolation have done a number on my brain. I find myself worrying even more what others think of me. How is this normal behavior for someone in full adulthood? I always thought entering this decade would mean having things “figured out” – like ascending to a new stage in a game where someone hands you a master key and says, “Congratulations. You’ve made it.” Instead, I’m sitting here constantly rethinking who I am, what I want to do, what makes me happy and what doesn’t. And holding both myself and my work up to an unrealistic, emotion-free standard of perfection is clearly not the answer. The best thing about being in this current messy stage of feelings is allowing my support group around me to fully work their strengths. I’m a broken record again today, but I want to thank my friends, my community, my clients for letting me work and learn at my own pace. This Instagram feed is irreversibly tied up in my own thoughts. I feel things very tenderly. I am tuning and re-tuning myself. That I can see. Very clearly. From E + R’s wedding, photographed while working with my good friend @williamtrangphoto ♥️

Walking down the #BigBasinMemories lane with this beautiful moment. Thank you to all who are sharing your stories, pictures, and memories in this unprecedented year of lows (#CaliforniaWildfires) and highs (our incredible community’s support). Join us and share your memories @ bit.ly/BigBasinMemories. ---------------------------- #Repost: 📷 Cassie Valente Photography It’s been (another) week of hard truths. The fires currently raging throughout California. The demonstrations against police brutality. The prevailing sense of helplessness as this pandemic drags on and we come face-to-face with existing inequalities: who gets to work from home and who doesn't, how our country’s healthcare picks favorites among us, how the tenet that I’ve been taught all my life, that our society is built on the idea that we are all fundamentally equal, is simply not true. This is an account for my photography and my ongoing documentation of joy and expression in other lives, but it’s also always been a journal of my own developing voice. It will continue to be so, as I think critically on what I hold to be the truth worth fighting for. Photograph from C + C’s engagement session at Big Basin, just a few weeks before the park fire. These two are so lovely and resilient at heart – COVID-19 has severely impacted their original wedding plans, but not their ability to find joy and remain steadfast, together. This ancient fallen redwood, estimated from growth rings to have been born around 544 AD, is no more. But several other living redwoods, protected by flame-resistant bark, have thankfully survived, even with scorched interiors still burning. They endure. Photographed with @fujifilm_profilm for my dear friend @aliceche on my #Contax645 and processed on a Noritsu scanner by @photovisionprints.
I always love when my clients add on calligraphy addressing to their #weddinginvitations. Each envelope is addressed by hand (by me!). A single envelope takes me about three minutes to calligraph. Multiply that by 100+ envelopes? Talk about a labor of love ❤️ photo: Cassie Valente Photography, invitations & calligraphy: Lairsey Paper Co., ring: Susie Saltzman Fine Jewelry, ring box: Esselle SF
