Battery Powered is excited to announce the grants made under its Women's Health & Wealth giving theme. As a community, our giving circle raised and granted $1 million to ten extraordinary organizations, all working to ensure that all women have control and agency over their wellbeing and their future!
This funding culminates four months of learning where we dove into women's economic empowerment as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights. We learned that at the current rate of progress, it would take nearly 300 years to reach gender equity. But we also learned about the organizations accelerating the pace and changing the landscape. We are honored to support the vital work of a portfolio of these organizations working toward this transformation. Check out the grantees at the link in our bio!

Adeline brings The Battery a special stripped-down duo performance (social distanced of course) with her keyboardist, co-producer Morgan Wiley, live from her studio. Since leaving her post as lead singer of nu-disco outfit Escort, French-Caribbean singer and multi-instrumentalist Adeline has been quickly proving herself to be one of the hardest working women in music. A prolific songwriter who produces her own music (with co-producer Morgan Wiley), she is “never not working”, and is set to release her sophomore release in June. With her intoxicating voice, head spinning compositions, funky bass playing and daring personal style, her hypnotic live show never fails to excite a crowd. She has toured globally, sharing the stage with such notables as Anderson .Paak, Lee Fields, Chromeo, Big Freeda and Natalie Prass, as well as making recent appearances at Afropunk, Funk on the Rocks (Red Rocks) and Winter Jazz Fest. When she’s not making and touring her own music, Adeline plays bass in CeeLo Green’s band. Adeline’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut album garnered praise from Vogue, NPR, Refinery 29, Rolling Stone, The Fader and many others.

LIVE at The Battery - Run Like a Girl - Embodied Mindfulness As women tap into their physical strength, they fire up their strength in the world. But our health is not only a source of personal power, our wellness is a resource that enables us to use our flourishing to help others flourish. How do we do this mindfully? There’s a lot of talk of mindfulness these days. Yet there’s a tendency to talk about it as if it is a reclusive pursuit, a journey inside ourselves in search of our own personal happiness. Mindfulness can be so much more robust and active, if we can reach beyond the mind and tap into a full body-mind presence. We are already tapping into the muscles of our bodies. Now let’s plug into its wisdom. Mina will explore the practice of what she calls embodied mindfulness—from the science and philosophy of consciousness to the practical, lived experience of unifying body and mind. Mina will pull together the disparate threads of longstanding and emerging ideas to explore the how, why and transformative power of the mind-body connection. Mina Samuels is a writer, playwright and performer, and in a previous incarnation, a litigation lawyer and human rights advocate; as well as an athlete and meditation practitioner. Her books include, Run Like A Girl 365 Days: A Practical, Personal, Inspirational Guide for Women Athletes and Run Like a Girl: How Strong Women Make Happy Lives. She has created and performed two award-winning solo shows (Hazards and Do You Know Me?) and an ensemble play (Because I Am Your Queen). Mina writes, speaks and offers workshops on the transformative impact of the body-mind connection and how it nourishes our health, creativity and purpose. For more about Mina visit http://www.minasamuels.com or on Facebook @MinaRunsLikeaGirl

LIVE AT THE BATTERY: The World Is Not (Necessarily) Doomed The housing crisis and the climate crisis in California are both so massive they can seem unsolvable. LIVE at The Battery - Yancey Strickler - This Could Be Our Future In his new book, THIS COULD BE OUR FUTURE: A Manifesto for a More Generous World, published October 2019, Yancey Strickler explores America's complicated relationship with money. America used to value all kinds of things like community, purpose, and fairness, but now virtually every decision gets made based on what will make more money. America’s increasing focus on maximizing financial gain is the reason why: -American entrepreneurship per capita is half the rate it was in the 1970s. -Our healthcare system is the cause of 62% of bankruptcies. -The cost of drugs keeps rising so fewer people in need can afford them. -Companies spend more on stock buybacks than R&D or raising pay. -Pop music, movies, and Broadways shows are mostly based on what has proven to make money instead of fresh creative ideas. -Our digital privacy is gone. How can we expand our definition of values beyond money and make choices that will create a fairer and more fulfilling world to live in? To find out, Strickler examines economists like Smith and Keynes, behavioral economists like Kahneman, popstar Adele’s innovative loyalty-measuring ticket algorithm, Chick-fil-A’s Sunday store closings, and the growth of the FIRM (Financial Independence Retire Early) movement. What he uncovers is a rational way for individuals and businesses to make decisions so we create a world aligned with what we really value. Yancey Strickler is the co-founder and former CEO of Kickstarter, the mission-driven global Public Benefit Company that helped pioneer crowdsourcing. He has appeared on NBC, CNN, MSNBC, NPR Marketplace, Planet Money, KCRW, PBS, and the BBC. He’s been profiled in Wired, Financial Times, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Forbes, and Vox and has given keynotes at SXSW, the Sundance Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art, Atlantic Ideas Festival, TechCrunch Disrupt, Web Summit, the Walker Art Center, 92nd Street Y, and mor

What shifts occur when we acknowledge that the binary of mental health vs. illness is false? In this intimate and engaging discussion, two good friends - one a psychologist and one an executive coach - will challenge you to rethink everything you believe you know about mental health. With their combined wisdom, Lisa Abramson and Leslie Carr will have a deep conversation about what it takes to truly thrive in a world that seems to constantly invite us toward challenge, stress, and burnout. This event is presented in parternship Battery Powered as part of "Battery Powered Plus," supplemental programming to the current Battery Powered theme on Mental Health.

LIVE at Battery Sparked 2020 - Defeat Your Archnemesis Did you know that you have a secret inner archnemesis that’s holding you back from living your most fulfilled life? Discover the 5 ways to defeat this saboteur and remove its invisible limits to an authentic, purposeful, and impactful life. Overcome your inner archnemesis holding you back from a more fulfilled and impactful life. Did you know that you have a secret inner archnemesis that’s holding you back from living your most fulfilled life? Every superhero battles an archnemesis, be it Superman versus Lex Luthor, Batman versus the Penguin, or Wonder Woman versus Ares. But at the core of their journey is their battle with themselves -- their own internal archnemesis. The truth is that in order for them to achieve their mission, they must first confront their own limitations and internal demons. They must confront the part that keeps them from their full and true power. Superhero stories speak to us because they resonate with the core truths of our own personal journeys as well. In this powerful interactive workshop, we will explore your internal archnemesis -- the part of you that keeps you from leading the life of purpose, impact, and fulfillment that you desire. You will learn not only how to mitigate its negative influence, but also look at how this part can actually serve you as an ally. You’ll leave the workshop with new clarity about your internal blocks and five strategies to live a life of more freedom and joy right away. Presenter Michael Tertes

LIVE at The Battery - ScribdChat: How Money Became Dangerous From a veteran of the trade, a provocative and entertaining voyage into the turbulent heart of modern money that sheds new light on the rise of our threatening and complicated financial system, how money became our adversary, and why finding a new course is crucial to a healthy society. Join authors Christopher Vareles and Dan Stone as they discuss their new book “How Money Became Dangerous” In the not too distant past, money was simple. You might have had a bank account and a mortgage, perhaps some basic investments. Wall Street didn’t have a reputation for greed and recklessness. That all started to change in the eighties, as our financial system became increasingly complex, moving beyond the understanding of the general public while impacting our lives in innumerable ways. The financial world began to feel like an enigma—a rogue force working against us, seemingly controlled by no one. Christopher is an industry veteran who’s had firsthand involvement in the events that shaped modern money. The book journeys from the crime-ridden LA jewelry district to the cutthroat Salomon Brothers trading floor, from the high-stakes world of investment banking to the center of the technology boom, capturing the key deals, developments, and players that made the financial world what it is today. The book illuminates the dark, hidden forces of Wall Street and how it has dehumanized and left behind everyday Americans. A fresh and enlightening take on how we reached this point, How Money Became Dangerous also makes the case for why Wall Street needs to be saved, if only to save ourselves. LIVE at The Battery - HERE WE ARE: American Dreams, American Nightmares with Aarti Shahani Who really belongs in America? In her memoir HERE WE ARE: American Dreams, American Nightmares, NPR correspondent Aarti Shahani uses her family’s immigration story to unpack the deep schism in American culture by which the “deserving” are deified and the “undeserving” demonized—in her family’s case, relentlessly. HERE WE ARE follows the lives of two family members: Aarti, the precocious scholarship kid at one of Manhattan's most elite prep schools, and her dad, the shopkeeper who mistakenly sells watches and calculators to the notorious Cali drug cartel. Together, the two represent the extremes that coexist in our country—even within a single family. LIVE at The Battery - Whistleblowers in Big Tech Whistleblowers in Big Tech are revealing essential truths about the use and abuse of our personal data, the encroachments of the surveillance state, and how Silicon Valley’s “move fast and break things” business style can lead to toxic cultures, even massive fraud. Theranos whistleblower Tyler Schultz (featured in John Carreyrou’s Bad Blood and Alex Gibney’s HBO series “The Inventor”) and Google whistleblower Jack Poulson (Frontline, 60 Minutes, New York Times) join veteran whistleblower attorney Mary Inman (who represented Shultz in his efforts to expose the Theranos scandal and still represents him) and New York Times-bestselling writer Tom Mueller, author of Crisis of Conscience: Whistleblowing in an Age of Fraud (Penguin Random House 2019), to discuss these themes, and explore the underlying causes of whistleblowing's recent rise throughout society. Tyler Shultz is an entrepreneur fostering innovation in healthcare. He graduated from Stanford with a Biology degree and entered the national scene when he courageously blew the whistle at Theranos. Tyler complained to the public health regulators in New York and was a source for a series of Wall Street Journal articles exposing Theranos’ dubious blood-testing practices. Owing to his role in exposing the fraud, Shultz was featured in Bad Blood, the book about the scandal penned by John Carreyrou, the original author of the Wall Street Journal articles, as well as in Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary “The Inventor”. Currently, Shultz is the CEO and Co-Founder of Flux Biosciences, Inc., a bay-area start-up. Flux Biosciences aims to bring medical grade diagnostics into the homes of consumers by using cutting-edge technology to measure biomarkers related to stress, exercise, and fertility. His efforts were recognized by Forbes when he was named to their “30 under 30” Health Care 2017 list. Dr. Jack Poulson is the founder of Tech Inquiry, a nonprofit focused on amplifying th
