What a wonderful night we had at the New Delhi Restaurant Annual White Elephant Gift Exchange! Thank you to all who joined the merriment. We have never seen so many ugly sweaters! And some excellent singing on the top-quality Karaoke system. Actually, we call it Curry-oke 😉
Everyone took home a gift, and enjoyed a ten-course dinner.
It was so much fun, it inspired us to create a Karaoke competition for next year's party where the winners will receive a plaque as a prize. There will also be prizes for ugly sweaters! Guests at the event will vote for the winners. So look out for the details, and make sure you book early.
If we missed seeing you on this amazing night, we want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, and every other festivity. Best wishes from Chef Ranjan, his family, and all the staff at New Delhi Restaurant.

Today, November 3, is New Delhi Restaurant’s 34th anniversary. It was on this day in 1988, that Former Mayor Art Agnos graciously inaugurated the restaurant. During these years, we have been reviewed as “San Francisco’s finest Indian restaurant,” and are the only Indian restaurant to be awarded “Legacy Business” status by the City & County of San Francisco - a rare honor awarded to businesses that have contributed to the very fabric of this beautiful city. Guests who have dined here include President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Vice President Kamala Harris, President Obama’s family, and countless other heads of state and dignitaries. It has been our pleasure to serve the 2 million guests that have enjoyed our cuisine. If you are amongst them, we would sincerely appreciate if you take a quick moment to nominate New Delhi Restaurant as one of Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat:
Each year, Yelp chooses its top 100 places to eat in the U.S. and Canada. Vote on your favorite here.

MEHENDI & SANGEET CEREMONIES
AT NEW DELHI RESTAURANT
Traditionally, sangeet or the music ceremony is part of the formal engagement that takes place a few days before the wedding in north Indian families, which is more of a “meet the families” affair. But today the concept is absolutely in vogue in all Indian marriages. In fact, the wedding is not complete without a sangeet. And the new-age sangeet is a fun event taking innovative directions such as “theme sangeet”. There is a typical theme storyboard where family members put in long hours of practice for the event with professional help. A theme of the modern Mughal-e-Azam is enacted by family members interspersed with old Hindi film songs.
The Mehendi and Sangeet ceremonies are important pre-wedding rituals in almost all Indian marriages. Both the bride and the bridegroom applies henna and the entire family enjoys participating in singing and dancing.
While the groom applies henna as a small token on his hands, the bride applies is on her hands and feet, making intricate patterns. Mehendi signifies the strength of love in a marriage. It is believed that the darker the color of the henna, the stronger the love and bond will be between the bride and the groom. Having henna applied is like spending time in a luxurious spa. Ushered by singing, dancing and merrymaking, the Mehendi and Sangeet ceremonies are grand and fun-filled affairs.

Meet Chef Ranjan and his famous New Delhi Restaurant
When Chef Ranjan was still in high school and only 14-years old, he became a vegetable cutter at Calcutta’s Park Hotel, thus launching a still-continuing career in the food industry. After finishing high school, Ranjan graduated from the Institute of Catering Technology, Hotel Management and Applied Nutrition. Yet, all this while, he continued to work part-time at different hotels. After graduating, Ranjan joined the Grand and Great Eastern Hotels in Calcutta before moving to India’s capital city of New Delhi to work at the Akbar and Janpath hotels. Ranjan then spent two years as a senior Chef in the kitchens of the Maurya Sheraton Hotel in New Delhi, before moving to Hong Kong.
Arriving in Hong Kong in 1979, Ranjan was recruited to run Ga***rd Restaurants worldwide from its headquarters in the Pearl of the Orient. Eventually, Ranjan parted with Ga***rd and launched New Delhi Restaurant in the city of Hong Kong. This popular restaurant soon grew into a chain of five individual restaurants.
Hong Kong is also where Ranjan met California girl, Kodi Gamble. They were married soon after. With the birth of their first child, Sarah, they moved to San Francisco, and brought the restaurant with them.
Today, Ranjan Dey is the star of the documentary series "My India With Ranjan Dey”, where he takes viewers on a cultural and culinary travel adventure through India. He is the creator of New World Spices, a special blend of six different spices inspired by the favorite dishes of three kings and three queens from six different regions of ancient India. And Ranjan’s other delicious creation, New Delhi Restaurant has been consistently voted the best Indian Restaurant in the Bay Area over the last 32 years. In January 2020, the restaurant was recognized by the City and County of San Francisco as a Legacy Business - a rare tribute that has only been awarded to 232 businesses. Yet, Ranjan’s heart belongs to the kids of Compassionate Chefs Cafe, a charity that helps three hundred children in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, and in the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, India, become global citizens like you and me.
At New Delhi Restaurant, Chef Ranjan has been serving delicious Indian meals with his own unique style of hospitality for over 32 years. Under his stewardship, New Delhi Restaurant is privileged to have operated from the same location in downtown San Francisco - with many of the same guests - since 1988. During this time, Ranjan has been visited by President Bill Clinton, President Obama’s family, Chef Martin Yan, the late Julia Child, Anthony Hopkins, Deepak Chopra, Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra, and countless others.

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR JIM SKIBA:
Thank you for joining us for the reading at Macy's Union Square in San Francisco on Friday, October 1st.
It was a great day to be able to have a formal but relaxed book launch for The Secret Lives of Water Drops.💧
🌟We want to thank Regina Shapiro, Personal Stylist Captain who hosted the event, along with Sophia Marinos-Janke of Cartier Parfums.🌟
✨And celebrated Chef Ranjan Dey, of the New Delhi Restaurant, San Francisco.
⭐️A special thanks to Diana Lynn Brown (Diana Brown), my producer for the event and the book series.
It was a lively group during the Q & A – I was able to share how the books are being used around the world.
The books are designed to be shared by reading them aloud to another person. Some additional ways the books are being read:
•On tape by men in the maximum security prison in Halifax, and then sent home so that the children can hear their father’s voice.
•At a memory care home in Berkeley
•Over Zoom to a 3rd grade class in Vallejo, and then the students were invited to draw pictures inspired by the story.
During the book signing at Macy’s, one special moment was when a woman asked for her book to be signed for her baby – due to arrive in about 7 months.
This was the youngest person to hear the book – when Diana read it at the book launch. Her Mom will be reading it again to the baby in the future.
The oldest person was my own Mother, Alene, when she was 92 and my sister read the book to her.
Thank you again for your support! The Water Drops have many stories to tell and I hope to be able to record more of them in future books.

The Indian celebration of Raksha Bandhan is coming up on August 21 and 22: a holiday honoring the love & duty between brothers & sisters. A gesture on this holiday is for the sister to tie a string around her brother's wrist. The traditional food of Rakhi is a Ladu - a sweet dumpling that sisters feed to their brothers until they can’t eat another bite. Come to New Delhi Restaurant to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, and we will give you as many complimentary Ladus as the sister can stuff into the brother's mouth! (Offer valid Saturday August 21 and Sunday 22, 2021.) Round up your siblings of birth or choice, and make your reservation: http://bit.ly/reserveNDR or 415-397-8470.

Divya and Tejas's charming wedding in California had interesting twists – from the gulab jamun cutting in lieu of a tiered cake to interesting henna designs, and a gorgeous location!
Being nature lovers, the couple wanted to be married outside for a natural feel but also wanted to keep their guests cozy and warm. When they saw the crisp modern barn and the outdoor lawn with the backdrop of the vineyard of Tyge William Cellars in Sonoma, California, they knew they had found their perfect place!
