One of the things we love most about our work is bringing animals to kids and families who are too sick or have disabilities and can’t make it to the zoo.

This past Saturday, we had the privilege of doing a private meet & greet for a 5-year-old girl with leukemia. Her favorite animals are lizards, and the moment she saw Debbie the bearded dragon at her door, her entire face lit up.

She had the sweetest personality and the best attitude, even though she has to take breaks often—because every single night she goes through chemo, and it takes a toll on her energy. When she needed to rest on the couch, we brought the animals to her so she wouldn’t miss a thing.

Her mom and three sisters were just as incredible—full of warmth, love, and gratitude. And somehow, Jaci, our zookeeper that day, kept it together through the whole visit.

But after they left, the tears came.

Our favorite memory? When Penny, our ball python, gently wrapped her tail around the little girl’s wrist, she giggled and said:
“I’m wrapped… like a present.”

And in that moment, we all realized—she truly was.
