Austen van der Bleek "What is a DJ if they don't dig?"
avbleek.com "What is a DJ if they don't dig?" is Austen van der Bleek's adapted maxim.

One of the Sunshine City's bright spots, he's a champion of undiscovered cuts, carrying the torch for revitalizing eclectic dance floors at home and beyond. Touching on threads of true-school Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Balearic dance music with the discernment of an insider's knowledge while bending the rules from the advantage of an outsider's perspective, his style is distinctive, yet diffi

cult to pin. He's a DJ that truly shines behind the decks, leaving listeners soaking up rays that linger on long after his sets. These radiant qualities make Van der Bleek a force to be reckoned with. After a career spanning a decade and a half, his free-wheeling spirit is evident through the repertoire he’s developed under his belt: including DJing an official afterparty for Nile Rodgers & CHIC, getting dapped by Flavor Flav in the DJ booth in Detroit, his track getting charted by Mark Farina on Juno despite having never released any music, receiving a co-sign for the fictitious award of “winner of the late night tiny patio party” from indie rock band Broken Social Scene, holding the unofficial record for the longest set at Suwanne Hulaween (6 hours), being the first DJ to play the Clearwater Jazz Holiday in its 45 years of existence, soundtracking a dreadlock cutting ceremony at Love Burn, and many other moments accumulated over the years — only possible or acquired from a true immersion and deep dive into the culture. His sets have served as a catalyst for dance floors before legendary figures like François K, Tony Humphries, Timmy Regisford, King Britt, Mark Farina, Roy Davis Jr., Mike Huckaby, Charles Webster, and more — an expansive list of dance music luminaries — as well as opening for Thievery Corporation on his city’s biggest stage. He’s performed at some of the South East’s premiere festivals and gatherings such as Suwannee Hulaween, Okeechobee Music Festival, The Atlanta Weekender, and The Love Burn, in addition to annual official Movement Festival pre-parties and Memorial Day Weekend afterparties in Detroit and notable venues across the country like Flash, Spot Lite, Dante’s HiFi, The Electric Pickle, and Bar Smith. Through his travels, he’s shared his free-spirited selections with Mexico City, Cartagena, NYC, Denver, and other destinations. He’s also reached listeners world-wide over the airwaves with mixes for Deeper Shades of House, Razor-N-Tape, Charivari, and other platforms. Wherever Van der Bleek lands, he’s always gotten his hands dirty doing the work to build community, bolster the culture, and bring to light missing musical links. His celebrated Open House Conspiracy residency has kept the fires burning for various strands of underground dance music across Florida. With more adventures on the horizon, it’s easy to believe there’s still even brighter days ahead, but his mission always remains rooted in a pure and simple ethos: to discover, collect, and share as much good music as possible with the people. Where Would You Be? Without Detroit there would be no St. Pete.

Legend has it we were a coin toss away from being named after the Michigan city by one of our founders. Kind of glad he lost because “Detroit, Florida”… sounds wrong and makes no sense — even by Florida standards. As a consolation prize, he got to name a hotel after his birthplace that still stands to this day. Recloose sent me a photo of its gate sign with “Dafuq?” while strolling the streets on his recent visit.

There’s a connection between the two cities, historically, but also one that we’ve tried to foster musically with the guests we’ve brought. This art is a postcard from the Sunshine City to the Motor City, with love and respect. Signing it “wish you were here,” would mean it begins and ends at the city limits and with the holiday weekend. Instead, “where would you be?” means bringing some of that spirit, sought out at the source, back home to share, recognizing and honoring the musical impact of Detroit on dance music culture around the world, these three friends included.

With Rat Galactic, Christian Parchuke, and yours truly.

See you today, Detroit. Be back in a week, St. Pete.

A St. Pete Joint — uploaded a new mix! Short, but sweet, it starts like a ‘70s film soundtrack before working its way up into hip-house.

This set is from the archives, recorded during an Open House Conspiracy party at Suite E Studios in March of last year warming up the room for my good friend and brother Jus-Ed. The title is a nod to his The Djoon Experience residency, “The Joint.” Ed’s actually the one who encouraged me to and guided me through recording my sets after years of fighting it thinking those are just for the people in the moment.

Mastering assistance from Santino Bontempo.

The Sunshine City in the RA News this week as they highlighted DJs For Climate Action’s global Earth Night we’re participating in.

Already underway with last night’s film screening and ocean conservation and upcycled/sustainable fashion talks, hope to see you tonight for the electronic music workshops, Saturday for our DJ/dance party, and all the days, really.

Sunday’s soundsystem culture day with reggae, dub, and riddim is also near and dear to my heart, having grown up listening to this music — bit of a pre/post surf session ritual with my dad.

We’re gathering in music, film, art, and community this week to celebrate the planet as a part of DJs For Climate Action’s Earth Night initiative.

I’ll be DJing Saturday night and co-presenting a free DJ workshop with Rat Galactic Thursday evening — both at Suite E Studios.

My portion of it will be “Taking Root: the Art of DJing.” While the DJ gear will be set up, it appears we’ve both landed on some more advanced topics for this one, rather than the usual introductory and basics I’ve done in the past — although any DJ, no matter their level, will surely walk away having gained something from it. I’ve never prepared anything for the workshops I’ve done, so you’ll also be able to shape what you want to get out of it. The art of DJing is being increasingly lost, so covering the artform, from the roots up, will be the launch pad for this night.

Plus, having grown up on reggae music, Sunday’s soundsystem culture celebration is very near and dear to my heart. The Sun Drop Soundsystem are bringing their hand-built array of long throw speaker boxes and horns inspired by traditional Jamaican soundsystems of the 60’s and 70’s. Aside from listening to great reggae, dub, and riddims on vinyl, they’ll also be hosting their interactive percussion and dub station experience they call the “Sun Drop Social.”

This is a very special week. I hope our community will help spread the word and prioritize showing up to whichever activities most peak your interest. Gathering in community and culture today is as important as ever, and especially for such a good cause as the environment on this wonderful little rock spinning through space that we call home.

I have a couple contenders for "favorite time of the year" in the Sunshine City, with Open House Conspiracy's annual official Movement Electronic Music Festival pre-party being one of them.

I'll be channelling a decade plus of inspiration from the music of, and many annual trips to, the D alongside a true purveyor of the city's multitude of sounds, Recloose, and my good friend, Greg G.

Revisit this loose, low sung, free-wheeling Sunshine City Disco open air mix from 2019 that captures a spirit from that time I'm afraid has unfortunately been lost.

Back then everything felt like an exciting, blank canvas. Now it's become somewhat of a stifling, oversaturated sea of monotony.

The floodgates are open and the tides have changed. I still hold hope that more will eventually surface who are willing to go against the current.

Recorded during an impromptu set in an unexpected time slot outside in the Atrium, St. Pete for Luv*Jam, after a 3 hour DJ set inside Ichicoro ANE just before. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, this was one of them. Featuring music by Alien Alien, Psychic Mirrors, Johnwaynes , Alex Gopher...

Excited to be a part of this and can't wait to see our Sunshine City show up and show out.

Calling all eco-conscious citizens of the Sunshine City!

St. Pete’s Warehouse Arts District will be participating in this year’s global DJs For Climate Action “Earth Night” initiative, presented locally by Suite E Studios, Sunshine City Disco, Galactic Sound & Magic, and St Pete Music.

Expanding beyond just one night, we’ve put together a full week of programming — beginning on Earth Day itself — from April 22nd–26th spanning across film, music, art, and conversations with a documentary screening, sonic workshops, live electronic jams, DJs, a Sunday reggae and dub social, and an eco-market.

This isn’t just a “save the date,” it’s a call to action. We’re seeking environmentally friendly orgs, vendors, artists, and more to join and participate in these community events and activations. If you have an idea or want to get involved, email [email protected]

A portion of funds from these events will go towards DJs for Climate Action and other environmental organizations. There’s free RSVP, donation options, and a full weekend pass bundle available.

The NYE tradition of taking over a warehouse for an alternative, underground celebration continues!

Most events list the number of DJs, performers, or stages, but quantifying with those kind of numbers doesn’t matter. It’s quality over quantity here, with over 100 years of combined DJ experience in one building.

In addition to this lineup of DJs in the intimate Suite E Studios, there will be eclectic lounge sets for the VIP experience in The Mad Monk, original live music at the wonderful Mad Meadow stage, and a combination of the two in the free Art In Session alleyway. Plus live painters and a James Oleson sculpture effigy at midnight.

Avoid the chaos of typical NYE celebrations and embrace the creativity happening in the amazing Warehouse Arts District instead.

There’s a $5 discount holiday special that ends Thursday at midnight. You can also hit up your favorite act for their unique discount code for an additional $5 off.
