My fears have been confirmed: our swans aren't headed to a sprawling sanctuary of grass and algae, but to an exotic breeding farm. It feels like the City would rather have them 'out of sight, out of mind' than follow the FWC's guidelines to keep them in the heart of Orlando. I’ve spent over 13 years volunteering with the swans at Lake Eola Park, and my heart is heavy knowing the magic is fading.
Lake Eola won’t be the same. The swans gave this place a Disney-like wonder, and without them, it feels like it’s returning to the giant sinkhole it once was in 1873. It’s frustrating to hear people claim a breeding farm is 'better' for the swans than being part of our community. Aside from the Avian Flu outbreak, these birds were Loved by many and we had some that were over 15yrs old and had no real issues being in the heart of downtown.
While the city of Orlando could have done better by the cygnets (baby swans), keeping the wandering swans out of the road, and taking better care of those with eye and foot issues, they belonged here, with us. They are like pets, and you won’t ever be Blessed by getting rid of your pets. I’ll deeply miss the swans and the people I’ve met over the last decade. It’s been an incredible journey, and I don’t regret a single moment."
I was always reminded of this passage when I fed the swans, “Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?" Many don’t know the swans blessed me every visit. Feeding them always helped me remember not to worry, cause if I help these birds God will surely help me. The swans were a true spiritual blessing for me, and I am going to miss that. So be sure to go out to Lake Eola and see the swans while you can.
The swans are the true gem of Lake Eola. They literally give the park life. Not sure what is Lake Eola without the Swans...
