On this day in 1982, the Journey single âDonât Stop Believinââ debuted on the Australian charts at #100 (March 1)
The iconic 80s anthem was the second single from the group's seventh studio album âEscapeâ, and was written by vocalist Steve Perry, guitarist Neal Schon, and keyboardist Jonathan Cain.
At the dawn of the 1980s, Journey was becoming one of the most successful rock acts of the era. The band added Cain from The Babys on keyboards (replacing Gregg Rolie) before entering the studio to record âEscapeâ.
Cain got the song title from encouragement his father gave him as a struggling musician living on Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard.
"Don't Stop Believin'" became the group's signature song and has continued to endure over the years, ranking at #133 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
It is the best-selling digital track from the 20th century, with over seven million copies sold in the United States.
In 2021, the song received the Grammy Hall of Fame award.
Make no mistake, when that distinctive keyboard riff of this classic rings out, every child of the 80s is just a small town girl, livinâ in a lonely world, or a city boy, born and raised in south DetroitâŚ.
And after a few beers or wines, we can all lift up our voices and sing it like Steve Perry when you watch this great live clip below:
