Snake Fact of the Day - Just because Burmese Pythons CAN eat alligators and deer doesn’t mean they have to. Or want to. They are opportunistic feeders who will eat what’s available. Unlike warm-blooded mammals, like lions, who must eat approximately the same amount at the same intervals, snakes will eat any meal they come across because they may not find another for weeks or months. Lions, and humans, can’t eat 6 months worth of food at one meal, but snakes can. In Florida, there’s abundant food and no natural predators. Snakes aren’t aggressive, ravenous killing machines looking to eat everything in Florida, including the people. They’re just snakes being snakes.
This is Khaleesi, our 5 year old Burmese Python. She has reached a healthy 12 feet and 60 pounds just eating rats and now rabbits. She has never requested an alligator. Or one of our neighbors.
