Cassandra is the founder of Ballroom Mississippi Dancesport Academy, Inc. (). She began dancing at age 11, training under JoBee Best with Mississippi Ballet Theatre, where she learned perseverance, poise, and a lifelong love of the performing arts.

She discovered ballroom at 48, when she was paired with the late John Murphy for a "Dancing with the Stars" fundraiser benefiting the Mississippi Opera. The pair won first place and helped raise $40,000. John became her teacher and partner, and they danced together for eight years until his passing in 2019.

In 2012, while watching public-school students compete at the Gumbo of Ballroom competition in Baton Rouge, Cassandra learned about the dancing-classrooms model and decided to bring it to Mississippi. After retiring from law, she made that vision her mission.

Today, she competes with five-time World Champion Oleksiy Pigottsky. In 2025, they won the National Championship in International Latin at the United States Dancesport Championships and took first place in American Smooth at the Ohio Star Ball.

Through the academy, Cassandra hopes to bring qualified ballroom instruction to schools and community programs across Mississippi, with free or low-cost programming and future scholarships honoring JoBee Best, John T. Murphy, and Keri Amis Cosmich.

Meet Zoe, one of our newest Ballroom Mississippi instructors. Zoe began her dance training in 2009 at The Academy of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre in Carmel, Indiana. She later earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance while studying at the University of Iowa, where she trained under George de la Peña, Eloy Barragán, Armando Duarte, Kristin Marrs, and Charlotte Adams. During her time at Iowa, Zoe had the opportunity to perform at the Joyce Theatre in New York City in Helios- Ritual to the Sun from Martha Graham’s Acts of Light, restaged and taught by Jesse Factor, former professional dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Following graduation, Zoe returned to Indianapolis to dance professionally with Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre for four seasons. In 2023, Zoe began a new chapter as a competitive ballroom dancer. She has received coaching from Nadia Eftedal, Amanda Besyedin, Andriy Besyedin, Eugene Kastevman, and Maria Manusova. Zoe currently performs and competes with her partner in the American Smooth and American Rhythm styles. Zoe is passionate about blending artistry, athleticism, and connection through both concert and ballroom dance.

Meet David, one of our newest Ballroom Mississippi instructors. David is from Carmel, Indiana and began his dance career in 2016. He has performed and competed throughout the United States, training with renowned coaches and champions including Slawek Sochacki & Marlena Stachura, David Hamilton, Heather Smith, Maja Servé, Nadia Eftedal, Eugene Katsevman, Maria Manusova, and Tony Dovolani. David’s competitive achievements include becoming a National American Smooth Rising Star Finalist and a National American Smooth Open Semi-Finalist. In addition to his competitive training, David studied biomechanics and its application to dance for four years under Armin Kappacher. He is deeply passionate about understanding the body through a kinesthetic lens. His teaching emphasizes musicality, biomechanics, and sustainable movement practices that support both artistry and longevity in all dance styles.

As a nonprofit organization, we provide accessible DanceSport and ballroom training to children throughout Mississippi, with a special focus on underserved and economically disadvantaged communities.
