April is designated as Month of the Military Child – a time to honor the sacrifices made by military families worldwide, with an emphasis on the experience of the dependent children of military members serving at home and overseas. Gold Star Spouse’s day will be observed on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. This day recognizes the sacrifices made by military spouses, a remembrance day for the survivors and fallen, and an appreciation for those who are sometimes in danger of being overlooked for their support and service to the country.

Former POW Recognition Day is a day that, while not as well-known as National POW/MIA Recognition Day, is just as important. The word “former” is the key to remembering the major difference between these two events honored every year on their respective days.

The United States Air Force Reserve celebrates its birthday every year on April 14. The United States Army Reserve celebrates its 114th birthday on April 23, 2022.

COMMANDERS CORNER

I hope everyone had a great February, but I am ready for spring as I am sure you will agree.

As a reminder to all Post members, nominations for Post Officer positions will start in March and again in April.

Our next Post meeting will be held on March 16th at 1930 Hrs. If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while, please come in. It will be great to see you all there.

In May, our Post and the Reynoldsburg Lions Club will be partnering on a fundraising drive to collect necessities that Veterans in our community and surrounding areas need. Some items we will be looking for are toiletries like soap, toothbrushes, socks, etc. A complete list will be posted at the canteen. This event is currently scheduled for Saturday April 21st and will include the Reynoldsburg Lions Club food truck. Keep an eye out for more information as it becomes available. This falls right in line with “The inaugural VFW Day of Service that kicks off the first Saturday of May — May 7, 2022 — marking the start of veteran-led community service projects to take place throughout the month.” Remember the VFW mission is “to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military, and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.” #Still Serving

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of our Post.

Have a great March!

The month of March is full of military days to celebrate.

The Navy Reserve Birthday is celebrated on Thursday, March 3, 2022. March 4th is recognized by many as Hug A G.I. Day. This holiday was started by a private citizen and has since made national headlines and become a part of the informal national holiday calendar.

March 5th is the official Navy Seabee birthday. “We build, we fight.” is the motto of Navy Seabees everywhere. K9 Veterans Day will be observed on Sunday, March 13th, 2022.

March 21 is Rosie the Riveter Day, an observation honoring the hard work and sacrifices American women made in the workplace during World War Two.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is observed every year on March 29 and is a way to thank and honor our nation’s Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.

Happy March😊 Before you know it, we will have the flowers blooming! (At least I hope, I hate the cold)!

Meals this month will be March 4th Swiss Steak, Roasted Potatoes, Green Beans, Desserts and also, baked fish for those observing Lent.

Also, we still have about 25 members that did not renew their dues. Remember, you can pay this on the Malta website by credit card, just by typing in your membership number. Remember, keycards will be turned off soon (actually March 10th), and you will no longer have access to a lot of the benefits the Auxiliary offers you. Please consider what you are losing by not paying your dues. As an Auxiliary, helping the Veterans is our number #1 cause. If you have any questions, please give me a call.

As stated in our last newsletter membership cards are taking a little bit longer from National so please be patient. That is beyond our control.

There will be no March Auxiliary meeting.

Remember April is Election of officers and May is installation.

Well February certainly was a cold one, but it thankfully got a little sunnier at the end. Now if it will just warm up...

We only did 6 military honors this month, so as far as that goes February was a relatively quiet month. Of course, we still had our monthly fund-raising dinners with Steak Night and Wing Night. We look forward to March to warm up and bring out bigger crowds for all dinners at the Post.

As always, we invite you to check us out. Veteran, Auxiliary member, it makes no difference. You work during the week and would only be available on weekends, wonderful. We have a great team of friends and would love to have you join us.

The month of February is a federally recognized commemoration for the contributions and achievements of African American figures in US History. Every year, we remember trailblazers in science, math, arts and culture, politics, religion, and the military, encouraging us to celebrate the influence of African American key figures while overcoming adversity.

February 4th is the official birthday of the organization known as United Service Organizations or USO. The USO has been a fixture in military life for more than seven decades. Founded in 1941, the agency is a private, not-for-profit organization working in cooperation with the Department of Defense.

The week of February 14 is notable for Valentine’s Day, but there is another observation during this week that has special significance for anyone with a veteran family member receiving medical care. The National Salute to Veteran Patients happens the week of February 14th and pays tribute to just under 100,000 patients a day that receive medical treatment in VA medical facilities as well as the nine million US veterans who get care every year.

President’s Day falls on Monday, February 21, 2022. The observance of George Washington’s Birthday, February 22nd, 1732, is always the third Monday in February.

February 19 is the official birthday of the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Officially set-up in the late 1930s as a “civilian reserve” operation, it was non-military in nature. The Coast Guard Reserve Act of 1939 was the earliest incarnation. The Reserve soon evolved into something much greater than the original authors of the law had envisioned.

Welcome February😊. We had a couple good turn outs for dinners, I want to thank all that helped and all that came out to eat! You are what keeps our organization going.

Meals this month will be February 7th - homemade beef and noodles over mashed potatoes, veggies, and dessert. And then February 16th will be soup and sandwiches.

We did get word that new membership cards from National are taking longer. I apologize for this but that is beyond my control. Also, if you know of someone that is filling out an application form make sure it is complete. We have to have completed forms or they have to be sent back to the applicant. I will have a copy on my door and a list of what makes a member eligible. But if you ever have a question, I am only a call or text away.

Also, we still have about 29 members that did not renew their dues. Remember, you can pay this on Malta by credit card, just by typing in your membership number. Remember, keycards will be turned off soon, and you will no longer have access to a lot of the benefits the Auxiliary offers you. Please consider what you are losing by not paying your dues.

We will be having “Krafting with Kids” on February 12th from 12:00-2:00 pm. The children get a chance to make a Valentine, paint a Valentine and will get a delightful desert! Please register by February 8th.

Next meeting will be Monday February 14th, at 7:00 pm. Call, Text or E-Mail me if you need anything! Have a great month.

My goodness, where has the month gone? Is it just me, or has January flown by?

As far as services, we were fairly quiet, being called on for just four honors.

Of course, there was Steak Night and Wing Night. And speaking of Wing Night, these dinners are done as fund raisers for the Color Guard, as we don't charge for our services. With that in mind, I regret to have to increase the cost of Wing Night by a couple bucks to $10.00. Also, we have changed up the order taking procedure. We are still serving but ask that you come to the table by the kitchen to place your order. As usual when things change, this may take a while to get used to, but it helps us be more efficient and make better use of our helpers.

And speaking of helpers, we are always open for more members. I feel I have a great team to work with but would love to see more folks join us. We have a meeting on the first Wednesday of each month at 1900 so feel free to stop by to check us out.

For funeral requests, please contact Geoff Ludwig at 614-390-1360.
