Thanks to our amazing #woodshop steward, Doug, we are loving the look of the shop for Nova Labs MakerSchool and for our community!

Ya’ll. Mr. Doug, our Woodshop Steward, spent his Labor Day weekend making sure the Woodshop workbenches are ready for MakerSchool’s first day tomorrow. Middle school and high school weren’t great years for him, he told me, but tech class with his Metalshop and Woodshop teachers were the highlight of his day.

Nova Labs is family. I can’t wait to introduce your family to mine this week.

Check out the classes she is teaching as well as our other classes on their page! #makerstobe #science #scienceeducation #makerspace #microschool #microschooling #homeschooling #northernvirginia #RestonVA #fairfaxcountyva

Karen Shumway

Director and Sciences and AP Instructor

Ms. Karen holds a master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and spent three years teaching biology, chemistry, and scientific research and design (SRD) courses for STEM magnet high schools in Montgomery County, Texas. She obtained teaching certifications in Life Science 8-12, General Science 8-12, and Gifted/Talented Education in addition to her basic Pedagogy certificate for the state of Texas. After Ms. Karen moved to West Virginia in November 2008, she became an accidental homeschooler because the preschools were all full, and began designing curriculum a few years later out of frustration with the available science curricula. She continued her teaching in homeschool co-operative settings, where she has taught hands-on courses in science, robotics, and Latin at all K-12 levels in West Virginia and Virginia for the last ten years. Ms. Karen is an accredited Advanced Placement instructor.

Finally, she has coached FIRST robotics teams with NASA and MARS in West Virginia, and with Nova Labs Robotics in Virginia at the FIRST LEGO League Challenge, FIRST LEGO League Explore, and FIRST Technical Challenge levels. As Director of Nova Labs Robotics, Ms. Karen supervised 8 robotics teams, 2 CyberPatriot teams, and multiple workshops just last year.

Fabiana Cesa
M.S. Mathematics, M.F.Arts Film Studies
Assistant Director and Gr 3-6 Pod Instructor & Spanish Maker Projects Instructor

Ms. Fabiana, a native of Argentina, holds both a Master of Science degree in Mathematics and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film Studies and she has been teaching both disciplines at NoVa Community College Loudoun since 2011. Before moving to Virginia, she worked as a film and video editor in Los Angeles. Since arrival, she has coached FIRST Lego League, FIRST Tech Challenge and Odyssey of the Mind, because like Einstein, she believes imagination is more important than knowledge. After all, anyone with imagination will be able to seek and acquire the knowledge necessary to pursue their ideas. Both imagination and creativity can and must be nurtured, and they are a crucial part of what the future will demand from our kids.

At the Nova Labs [name here], Fabiana will be organizing workshops about film and animation and conducting Spanish conversation/making sessions.

She thinks it is hilariously freakish to be talking about herself in the third person.

So glad we could help!

Since everything started shutting down in March, Oakton High School's Oakton Cougar Robotics team has been working with Nova Labs of Reston to produce thousands of pieces of PPE for medical facilities, health centers, and other community organizations in the area. 3D printers have been printing around the clock to produce parts, and team members have been sewing and assembling non-stop.

The team was very excited about the opportunity to help keep Britepaths' staff, volunteers, and clients safe as well by donating masks, face shields and ear savers. Our Data Architect Gwendyl Harter (back right) has been involved with the team with her children and helped facilitate the donation. We are so grateful to the team for these generous donations and for all their great work to help our neighbors on the front lines!

Given that our offices are currently closed, this donation gives us a sufficient supply of PPE for the time being. We'll reach out if we find that we need more donations in the coming months.

So glad we could help Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington!

So glad we could help Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington!

Nova Labs of Reston, Va., supplied Catholic Charities staff with a generous donation of 500 face shields. We’ve had an abundance of new clients seeking help during the pandemic. This donation allows us to work safely with them and in the community. Thank you, #faceshield makers. #PPE #GetusPPE #3Dprinting #lasercutting #makersrespond #DMV #COVID19Response #PPEChallenge

We were proud to partner with Community Bridges Inc. for their Healthy Bridges virtual camp. Thank you to Karen Shumway for teaching the girls about mindfulness and to Jalene Gelana for working with the girls from afar to sew fabric masks.

Thank you to Nova Labs for hosting two sessions for our Healthy Bridges participants! They hosted one session on the brain and mindfulness. In the second session, they taught girls how to sew their own masks and sent kits to each girl!

We are looking forward to attending this event this evening.

I am casting a new tv show for a major production company. We are searching nationwide for Inventors, entrepreneurs, or everyday people who after experiencing a natural disaster were inspired to create a new product, gadget, or device. Whether it was the current virus, hurricane, earthquake, flood, fire, blizzard, pandemic, or other natural disasters we are looking to find inventions, products, or gadgets created due to that experience. We want to tell their stories and show their inventions to the world! We are looking to showcase people whose ideas have already gone to market, are in production, or at a minimum have a working prototype. Please feel free to share this information and the casting flyer with anyone you think might be interested. To be considered for the project please complete our casting application using the website on the flyer. We are only casting for a couple of weeks so get those applications in soon
Is anyone interested in fabricating these? I would pay to have on fabricated for me:

I would love to learn how to repair two parson's chairs where the back has broken off--seems mostly due to poor design, but I'd really hate to just throw all six chairs away....do you ever hold repair workshops for help with miscellaneous things like this?? I'm sure I'm not the only "brown thumbed wonder" who would enjoy learning how to repair something and save from the landfill...
