Charleston Books and Brews

Independent bookstores are starting to become meccas of community and information exchange. In Charleston and the tri-county area, there is a lack of a volume bookseller that specializes in African American literature. Additionally, women tend to make the largest percentage of book and spiritual healing consumables, and based upon this Charleston Books and Brews will market especially to the African American female. With the addition of an online portal, Charleston Books and Brews will specialize in children, Fiction, Nonfiction, and Self improvement books in store from local and international authors. The black author in Charleston can also be hard to find, and Charleston Books and Brews will attempt to remedy this by providing a public space of sharing ideas and featuring local black authors.

South Carolina is 6th in the nation for violent deaths of women, and in a six month period this year, six women and one 15-year-old girl were killed by men in the tri-county area. With these jarring statistics in mind, Charleston Books and Brews will promote the self-improvement and healing of black women with events such as workshops, author readings, and spiritual events, massage sessions, and Reiki sessions. The hope is for Charleston Books & Brews to come a comfortable place where African American women can come to connect and grow. This will foster a sense of community and improve the daily lives of local African American women.
